Tulsa Drops Both Games on Final Day of FIU Classic

MIAMI, Fla. – The Tulsa Golden Hurricane close out the FIU Classic losing to Ball State 2-1 (9 innings) and Maryland 5-0 at Felsberg Field.
 
Tied 0-0 to Ball State in the top of the 8th inning, Tulsa placed Abby Jones on second base as part of the international tie-breaker rule. After a sacrifice bunt by Mikayla Whitten moved Jones to third, Kari Briggs singled up the middle to give the Hurricane a 1-0 lead.
 
The Hurricane loaded the bases in the top of the 9th innings, after Ball State tied the game in the bottom half of the 8th. Chenise Delce was placed on second to start the inning, moving to third on a sac bunt by Aubree Seaney. Sarah Briers was hit by a pitch and Celyna Shaw drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. However, a ground out by pinch-hitter Kylie Norwood ended the inning.
 
In the bottom of the 9th, Ball State loaded the bases with no outs on a walk and an error. Kassidy Scott forced a ground ball to Briers at second who threw out the runner at the plate. The Cardinals attempted to score a run on a bunt, but Shaw recorded the out at home. However, Shaw attempted to record the double play at first throwing the ball away allowing Ball State to score the winning run.
 
During the second game of the day, Maryland held the Hurricane to one hit in the game. The Terrapins scored three runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to extend their lead to 5 runs. Scott drew the start against the Terps giving up 3 earned runs in 6.0 innings.
 
Tulsa returns to action on Wednesday, March 11 when they face off against Western Illinois at the Collins Family Softball Complex at 5:00 p.m.
 
Game 1
 
The Golden Hurricane and Cardinals squared off in a pitching duel for the first 7 innings of the game, going into extra innings as Tulsa lost 2-1 in 9.
 
Samantha Pochop drew the start for the Hurricane going 7.0 innings allowing 6 hits, an unearned run and 5 walks. The junior continued her strong start from the circle striking out 8 Cardinals batters.
 
Scott relieved Pochop in the bottom of the 8th inning with a runner on first with no outs.  The senior forced the next Ball State batter to ground into a double play before ending the inning by striking out the last batter.
 
In the top of the fifth inning Briers started off for the Hurricane with a single to right field. She was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tajiag Ellison. Kari Briggs came to the plate with 2 outs and the bases loaded for Tulsa; however, the inning ended with a groundout to the Cardinals second baseman.
 
Ball State started Deborah Jones, who went 8.0 innings allowing an unearned run on 3 hits while striking out three. In relief Tieghan Morio picked up the win not allowing a hit or run in her one inning of play.
 
Game 2
 
Maryland started the game hot scoring 2 runs in the first three innings. In the first the Terps used an infield single, a stolen base and a passed ball to put a runner on third with one out. A single to left field gave Maryland their first lead of the game.
 
Tulsa put their first baserunner on in the top of the third as Shaw drew a 7-pitch walk. After Kylie Norwood was hit by a pitch in the top of the 5th, she advanced into scoring position on a groundout. However, the Hurricane ended the inning on a strikeout.
 
The Hurricane started the top of the 7th putting Delce on first with an error by the third baseman. Later in the inning, Tulsa had runners on first and second with two outs, ending the game on a fly out to left field.
 
In her 7th start of the season, Scott went 6.0 innings giving up 7 hits, 3 earned runs and 1 walk. She struck out 3 of the Terrapin batters that she faced moving to 2-5 on the season.
 
Tulsa is back in action at the Collins Family Sports Complex on Wednesday, March 11 at 5:00 p.m. against Western Illinois. The game is free admission to all fans, and Tulsa is hosting Tik Tok night requesting fans to submit their Tik Toks to be feature on the video board.
