TULSA, Okla. – The Tulsa football team resumed practice Friday afternoon following a nine-day paused period due to eight positive COVID-19 tests.
Tulsa Head Coach Philip Montgomery was pleased with today's workout, which was just No. 5 of the preseason for the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa's practiced for two hours in the mid-afternoon heat on Harwell Field.
"I thought our retention was really good and obviously our energy was great. They were excited to be back on the field. We just have to continue to build off of that," said Montgomery. "We have to get into football shape, but anytime you have that type of layoff it doesn't matter how much running you really do, it doesn't get you into the kind of shape you need to be to play the game, but it definitely helps."
"As the day went on, we got a little more crisper," said Montgomery. "You have to fight some of the fatigue that sets in, but as far as guys knowing what to do and being in the right spots, I was pleased."
"It's almost like this was the first day again. You had those kinds of jitters coming out on the field — we get the opportunity to get out here and we've got to take advantage of it," added Montgomery.
Leading up to today's practice session the players eligible to participate were involved in strength and conditioning activities and team meetings over the past week.
The eight student-athletes who tested positive will remain in isolation until medically cleared.
Tulsa will be back on the practice field Saturday morning.
