Tulsa Football Preview: Quarterbacks
8/30/2020 1:28:00 PM | Football
For the first time since the 2016 season Tulsa's starting quarterback will be the same for a second straight season.
Â
Zach Smith (6-3, 227) returns as the starting quarterback for the Hurricane, but he's not the only returning signal-caller with starting experience. Junior Seth Boomer (6-3, 208) started eight games as a redshirt freshman in 2018.Â
Â
"It's such a benefit to have your quarterback returning and having that starter back makes other players continue to elevate their game," said Montgomery.
Â
"This is the best overall QB room we've had since I've been here. From a depth standpoint, we have multiple guys that I have confidence in that can go into a game and execute at a good level. It's always different when you're put in those situations," said Tulsa Head Coach Philip Montgomery.
Â
Smith, who sat out the 2018 season after transferring from Baylor, took control of the offense last year, starting all 12 games and throwing for 3,279 yards and 19 touchdowns with only nine interception. Boomer, who came in for an injured Smith against UCF, led Tulsa to a 34-31 victory against the Knights last season.
Â
In 2018, Boomer completed 101-of-198 passes for 1,378 yards and nine TDs overall, while in the final five games he completed 61.2-percent of his passes for 945 yards and seven TDs with just two pickoffs.
Montgomery is also high on sophomore Davis Brin (6-2, 208), who has seen limited action in one game in each of his two seasons with the Hurricane.
Â
"Boom has plenty of playing time underneath his belt and Davis has looked extremely sharp throughout camp. Those three guys are really operating at a good level," added Montgomery. "We're still a little young behind that, but overall, I really love the talent, the way they're locked in and their understanding of what we're trying to do offensively."
Â
True freshman Roman Fuller (6-4, 183) came to Tulsa at mid-semester after completing his career at Decatur (Texas) High School. He threw for over 9,000 yards and 90 touchdowns with a 66.4 completion percentage in his three prep seasons.
Â
Walk-ons Brandon Marquardt (6-1, 220), a junior who was the Oklahoma Player of the Year as a prep senior in 2016, and Carson Collins (61, 205) add depth to the position.
