GAME BOOK

BOISE, Idaho ––
Boise State out-scored Tulsa 14-2 in the final 4:49 to capture a 63-58 home win at ExtraMile Arena Friday night.

Jeriah Horne with 17 points and 14 by Sam Griffin led the Hurricane in scoring, while the Broncos had four players in double figures, led by Marcus Shaver and Abu Kigab's with 17 points apiece.

Tulsa fell to 4-4, while Boise State improved to 4-4 on the year.

Boise State, coming into the game with a three-point percentage of .284, made 9-of-22 treys for 41 percent and shot 51 percent overall tonight. The Hurricane shot 41.4 percent from the field and just 31.6 percent from three-point range. Boise had a 34-to-21 advantage in rebounding but had 24 turnovers compared to only 14 for Tulsa. Despite the 10-turnover difference the Hurricane had only a two-point edge in points off turnovers at 21-19. Tulsa was 4-of-4 from the free throw line, while the Broncos were 8-of-16.

"We took a lot of bad shots in that stretch over the final five minutes. Learning how to win is something we have to do. We didn't get to the one-on-one because we stopped trying to attack. In a late game when you have a lead like that you don't have to take contested three's. We took a bunch of those that were just tough shots," said Tulsa Head Coach Frank Haith.

"Defensively, we were active. We turned them over 24 times. It seemed like when we took a bad shot they scored, got an and-one or a three. We just didn't execute well enough down the stretch to win the game," added Haith.

The Hurricane led by seven points at 56-49, with just under five minutes to play before the home team outscored Tulsa by 12 over the final 4:49.

Trailing by one point at halftime, Tulsa opened the second half more aggressive offensively, scoring 11 points in the first three minutes. Curtis Haywood's driving layup made the score 37-33 at the 17:01 mark as the Hurricane made four of its first five field goals of the half. Griffin's layup 37 seconds later made it an 8-0 run and put the Hurricane ahead 39-33 before a Boise State layup one minute later ended Tulsa's scoring run.

The Broncos tied the game at 39-39 as the Hurricane went on a four-minute drought until Horne knocked down a trey at the 12:34 mark to put Tulsa ahead 42-39.

Tied 44-44 with 10:52 remaining, the Hurricane went on a 8-0 run with six of those points coming off Boise turnovers to take a 52-44 lead at the 7:26 mark. The Broncos responded with the next five points to bring the home team to just a three-point deficit, 52-49, with 6:29 to play.
Horne hits a turnaround jumper to make the score 54-49 at the 6:03 mark and the next time down the court Curtis Haywood's layup put Tulsa up by seven at 56-49. The Tulsa seven-point lead didn't last long as the Broncos scored six straight points to come within two points at 56-54 with 4:24 left on the game clock.

Kigab's two free throws tied the score at 56-56 for the Broncos with 3:56 remaining. Darien Jackson's layup put the Hurricane ahead 58-56, but Marcus Shaver's three-pointer at the 2:09 mark put Boise ahead for good with a 59-58 lead, its first lead since the 18:24 mark of the second half when the Broncos led 33-31.

Boise made one of two free throws for a 60-58 lead and added another free throw for a 61-58 lead with 0:36 to play. A second-chance three-pointer made by Horne with 0:06 left that would have tied the score was disallowed due to shot clock violation. The Broncos made 3-of-3 free throws to close out its six-point victory.

Boise State scored the first points of the game with a three-pointer, then Tulsa scored the next five points, all by Griffin, for a 5-3 in the first 2:01 of the game. After its first three points, the Broncos went on 3:42 scoring drought before tying the score at 5-5 with 15:20 to play.

The Hurricane had a drought of its own from the field for 4:45 before Griffin's jumper at the 13:44 mark put Tulsa ahead 9-8. Despite leading 13-11, Boise had nine turnovers in the first 10 minutes but Tulsa was only able to turn those miscues into five points.

A team shooting sub-30 percent from three-point range on the season, the Broncos converted on four of its first seven treys for 57 percent.

Boise State went on a 6-0 run to take a 22-16 lead at the 4:29 mark, as Tulsa was on a 4:35 scoring drought while going 0-of-6 during that span. Rey Idowu's jumper stopped Tulsa's drought and made the score 22-18 with 3:42 left on the first-half clock.

Horne's three-pointer at 0:01 left made it a one-point deficit, 27-26, at intermission for the Hurricane.

Some telling stats in the first half saw Boise hold an 18-8 advantage on the boards and shooting 55-percent from the field and 50-percent from three-point range (5-of-10), as compared to Tulsa's 37.0 field goal percentage, but the Hurricane was 4-of-8 from behind the arc.

At halftime, Tulsa attempted 27 field goals to Boise's 20. The Broncos had 16 turnovers as compared to only six for Tulsa, but the Hurricane converted just nine points off those turnovers. Horne led Tulsa with eight points followed by Griffin's seven points, while Boise State's Shaver had a team-high eight points.

Tulsa returns to the Donald W. Reynolds Center for three straight home contests beginning with Tuesday night's (Dec. 7) game against Loyola Marymount. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. and it will be aired on ESPNU.
