Tulsa couldn't overcome a second-half dry spell and fell 60-55 to Loyola Marymount Tuesday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
 
LMU outscored Tulsa in the second half 35-to-24 while shooting 54 percent from the field after the intermission. The Lions went on a 17-2 run to start the second half for a 42-33 lead. The Hurricane battled back and took a 53-51 lead with 3:24 left on the game clock, but LMU finished out the contest on a 9-2 run for the five-point victory.
 
Tulsa fell to 4-5 on the year with its third straight loss, while Loyola Marymount improved to 6-3.
 
"It was a tough one for us," said Tulsa Head Coach Frank Haith. "We had a lot of empty possessions offensively and they made some good shots."
 
Sam Griffin was the only Tulsa player in double digits with 16 points, while Jeriah Horne had a season-high 11 rebounds. Eli Scott and Dameane Douglas led the Lions with 19 and 18 points, respectively, and each had 11 rebounds.
 
Tulsa shot 43-percent from the field, a meager 19-percent from behind the arc and only connected on 6-of-11 free throws for 54 percent. Loyola outrebounded the Hurricane by 15, 40-25, but the Hurricane scored 31 points off 22 Lion turnovers.
 
As they did in the first half, LMU sprinted out on another run, 7-0, within the first three minutes of the second half to take a 32-31 lead. Rey Idowu's basket gave Tulsa its first points of the second half and a 33-32 lead.
 
The Lions increased its run to 17-2 for a 42-33 lead through the first eight minutes. After Idowu's two-pointer at the 16:59 mark, LMU raced off to a 10-0 run while the Hurricane went on a scoring drought of 5:50.
 
Cam Shelton's layup at the 12:05 mark gave the Lions its 42-33, while Griffin's jumper at the 11:09 mark ended Tulsa's dry spell and made the score 42-35. LMU pushed its lead to 10 with 10:57 to play, before the Hurricane cut it to five points at 45-40 on a traditional three-point play by Darien Jackson.
 
Tulsa, after its dry spell, scored nine points in less than two minutes but still trailed the Lions by a score of 48-42 with 9:36 remaining in the game.
 
Two consecutive baskets by Jeriah Horne cut the Hurricane deficit to one point at 48-47 with the 6:23 to play. Horne's two free throws made it a 50-49 contest a minute later. Jackson's layup with 4:06 on the clock tied the score at 51 and his layup with 3:24 on the clock put the Hurricane ahead at 53-51.
 
LMU's Douglas knocked down a trey from the right corner and Scott scored on a jumper in the paint to give the Lions a three-point lead at 56-53 with just 1:19 left in the contest.
 
To start the game, LMU jumped out to a 9-1 lead as the Hurricane didn't connect on its first field goal until the 15:37 mark on a put-back layup by Horne to make the score 9-3. The Lions added a three-pointer for a 12-3 lead at the 15:18 mark.
 
The Hurricane went on a 7-0 run to cut its deficit to two points at 12-10 with 12:45 on the clock. LMU took a 16-12 lead before Tulsa scored the next six points to take its first lead of the game, 18-16, when Griffin scored on a fast-break layup at the 8:18 mark.
 
Anthony Pritchard's three-pointer put the Hurricane ahead 21-19 with 6:46 on the first-half clock to start a 9-0 run for Tulsa and a 27-19 lead at the 3:32 mark.
 
Tulsa went into halftime with a 31-25 lead as Griffin led all scorers with 12 points, while Horne had seven rebounds and a career-high three blocks to lead the Hurricane in the first half.
 
After trailing 12-3 in the early going, the Hurricane ended the half outscoring the Lions by a count of 28-13. Tulsa ended the first half shooting 48-percent from the field and scored 17 points off LMU turnovers. 
 
Tulsa will be back at the Reynolds Center this Saturday, Dec. 11, for a 1 p.m. game against Southern Illinois. It will be the renewal of a series between two rivals from the Missouri Valley Conference.
