Tubby Smith Inducted into to National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame

TULSA, Okla. — Former TU men's basketball head coach Tubby Smith was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, joining a group among the greatest coaches and players in the history of the game. Smith, who was the head coach for Tulsa from 1991-95, joins a class including Ted Owens, Jay Wright, Danny Ainge, Walt Hazzard, and Glen Rice.
 
Smith took over the Golden Hurricane program in 1991 and won 79 games over four seasons. He would win back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference titles in 1994 and 1995 and would lead Tulsa to the Sweet 16 both seasons. Smith is the only coach in program history to lead the school to multiple Sweet 16s. In 2022 he was elected to the Tulsa Athletics Hall of Fame.
 
Smith would go on to win 642 games as a head coach, ranking him 37th all-time. He would win the 1998 National Championship while at Kentucky and in 2003 was the Naismith College Coach of the Year, AP College Basketball Coach of the Year, NABC Coach of the Year, and USBWA Henry Iba Award. Smith would win three SEC Coach of the Year honors (1998, 2003, and 2005) as well as winning the 2016 Big 12 Coach of the Year.
