Perry and Jackson Lead TU to a 7-2 Victory over the Bulls

4/10/2021 6:08:00 PM | Softball

TAMPA, Fla. – Tulsa evens the series at 1-1, defeating USF 7-2 in game one of the scheduled double-header Saturday afternoon in the USF Softball Stadium. Game two went to the middle of the 5th innings, before being suspended because of weather.

The Hurricane used a strong 6th inning to build a five-run lead in its' 7-2 victory. The inning started with an Aubree Seaney single through the right side of the infield. Sarah Briers put down a sacrifice bunt, that the third basemen threw into right field, allowing Kennedy Cramer, the pinch runner, and Briers to advance to second and third.

Makayla Jackson pinch hit for the Hurricane driving a two-run RBI single into left field, giving the Hurricane a 4-2 advantage. Tajiah Ellison followed with a pinch hit single and stole base to give TU runners in scoring position without an out.

Kyndal Pirtle reached on a fielder's choice, before Haley Morgan drove in a run by being hit by a pitch. Alexis Perry put the icing on the cake for Tulsa with a two-RBI single down the left field line.

Samantha Pochop drew the start for TU, throwing 6.0 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 7. She picked up her 6th win of the season moving her record to 6-1. Kassidy Scott closed things out for Tulsa throwing one inning of scoreless softball.

Perry gave the Hurricane its first lead of the game in the 3rd innings, driving in Pirtle and Morgan on a single up the middle. Pirtle began the inning with a single, and Morgan was hit by a pitch, advancing to second on a stolen base.

The Bulls struck first in the game, using back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases. USF pushed the runner at third with a sacrifice fly to center field, giving them 1-0 lead. Pochop ended the innings forcing the Bulls to fly out to right.

Perry and Jackson led the Hurricane on the day from the plate combining to go 3-5 on the day with 6 runs batted in.

Chenise Delce started the second game for TU, coming out hot with two scoreless innings. Before the delay, the Oklahoma City native had gone 4 innings allowing just one run on five hits while striking out two.

The Bulls used three singles in the bottom of the third inning to take the early 1-0 lead over the Hurricane.

Tulsa fought back, using consecutive singles by Norwood and Morgan to begin the top of the fifth inning. After a four pitch walk by Perry, Delce sent a slow grounder to second base sending Norwood home to tie the game.

The game continued Sunday, April 11 after being suspended the night before. Delce was dealing for the Hurricane allowing just one hit in 4 innings, before a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Hurricane had a chance, as Abby Jones walked to start off the top of the 7th inning. She advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Norwood. Morgan put in a great at bat drawing the count to 3-and-2, before being hit by a pitch. The umpire ruled her out for being over the plate, sending the potential baserunner back to the dugout. The inning ended a batter later on a strikeout, squashing the Hurricane hopes.

The Hurricane's originally scheduled game for Sunday, April 11 has been canceled due to inclement weather in the Tampa area. Tulsa will be back in action on Friday, April 16 to take on the Memphis Tigers in the Collins Family Softball Complex.
