The Hurricane Completes Sweep of Pirates Sunday

4/25/2021 1:39:00 PM | Softball

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Hurricane completed the sweep of the East Carolina Pirates Sunday morning, taking the series finale 3-2 at the Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.

Tulsa entered the top of the 6th inning trailing the Pirates 2-1. Makayla Jackson started the inning off by hitting a rocket to center field, as the ball cleared the fence the Pirate center fielder robbed Jackson of the homer. Following the near home run, Kylie Norwood drew a walk and Haley Morgan was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with one out for Alexis Perry. Perry hit a hard ball to second base, where the second basemen bobbled the shot, loading the bases for TU.

On the next pitch, Norwood scored from third on a wild pitch by the Pirate pitcher and Chenise Delce scored Morgan from third on a sacrifice fly to left field, giving TU the 3-2 lead.

Delce (6-5) drew the start in the circle for the Hurricane. She went 7 innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out four ECU batters. Of the four hits that Delce gave up, three came in the first inning when the Pirates scored their two runs.

In the first inning, Norwood started the game off with a bang, doubling to left field on the first pitch of the game. Morgan singled her home to give Tulsa the early 1-0 lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the first the Pirates recorded back-to-back singles to put a runner in scoring position. ECU then tripled to right field over the outstretched arm of Jackson, giving the Pirates a 2-1 advantage, their first lead of the series.

The game saw strong pitching from both sides, as both teams combined for just 2 hits after the first inning.

The Hurricane improved to 21-10 on the season and 12-3 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Pirates fell to 11-28 on the year and 2-14 in AAC action.

Tulsa will be back on the field this Wednesday, April 28, as the Hurricane welcomes the Oklahoma State Cowgirls to the Collins Family Softball Complex at 5:00 p.m. aired on ESPN+.
