TULSA, Okla. –– The heat index reached 101 degrees as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team went through practice No. 6 Tuesday morning on the grass of Harwell Field.
"We finally got a little heat today. We had a nice breeze early, but then it fell off and the heat came on. It was good. We'll need a few more days of the excessive heat because that's what we'll play in. The guys reacted well to it. We had a very spirited practice," said Head Coach Philip Montgomery.
Tulsa takes Wednesday off for its second off day since preseason practice started a week ago.
"Obviously with procedures changing and what we have to follow now, I think we've done a good job with our installation but we need to continue working it. Our guys have really retained a ton and we've been able to push forward.
Montgomery talked about the progress being made at the cornerback position.
"I think our corners are doing really well. Tyon (Davis) has had an outstanding camp, Travon (Fuller) has been impressive. Reggie (Ellis) has stepped up and made some plays. Really, all of them have stepped up and made plays," said Montgomery. "I'm excited and enthusiastic about the group and the way that they're learning and being able to retain what they've learned."
Montgomery loves the athleticism of the Tulsa corners.
"I think we're more athletic and we've been great in our change of direction. Our guys have been playing physical. The biggest thing for our guys is getting used to schematically what we're doing and having the confidence to play faster," said Montgomery. "Then it's getting under the lights and seeing them do it in game situations and getting really comfortable with it."
"I love where we're at with our corners," added Montgomery.
