TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa men's basketball team will take on Wichita State in a conference showdown at the Charles Koch Arena on Tuesday night.
Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m. (CT) on ESPNU. Anish Shroff will provide the play-by-play, and Sean Harrington will serve as the analyst for the matchup. Fans can also catch Bruce Howard and J.R. Rollo on Big Country 99.5 FM.
The Golden Hurricane (7-12, 1-7 The American) snapped its seven-game losing streak and picked up its first conference win with a convincing 76-45 win against South Florida in the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Saturday evening.
Sam Griffin and Jeriah Horne combined to score 44 points on 55 percent shooting, including seven 3-pointers, in the win. Horne led the team with six rebounds, though Nikita Konstantynovskyi and LaDadivus Draine both had five, and Rey Idowu grabbed four of his own.
Tulsa's defense held the Bulls to 30 percent shooting and only 17 percent from deep, allowing Tulsa to build a sizeable lead. The Hurricane led 40-27 at the break and then opened the second half on a 9-4 run to blow the game open. Ari Seals closed the game with a follow-up layup to earn his first points as a Hurricane.
Wichita State (10-8, 1-5 AAC) turned the ball over 19 times as the Shockers saw a late lead slip away in a 67-66 loss at Tulane on Saturday. Wichita State held a 55-42 advantage with 10:48 to play, but costly mistakes allowed the Green Wave to come back. Tyson Etienne was called for a foul on a 3-point shot with six seconds remaining, allowing Tulane to take the lead, and Wichita State was unable to answer on the other end.
Tulsa and Wichita State will continue their longstanding rivalry on Tuesday as they meet for the 135th time. The Shockers lead the series 72-62 thanks to its victories in 15 of the previous 17 meetings. Tulsa has lost nine straight in Wichita and is seeking its first road win since an 82-76 victory on Dec. 8, 2001.
The Shockers have won the previous three meetings and swept the series last year. The Hurricane's last win came in a 54-51 victory in the Reynolds Center in the 2019-20 season. Elijah Joiner hit a 3-pointer as the clock ran out, lifting the Hurricane to victory.
After his 23-point game against South Florida, Horne upped his average to 16.8 to pace the Hurricane. He leads the team with 6.9 rebounds per game, and leads the conference in defensive rebounds, pulling down 5.5 a night.
Griffin is second on the team, averaging 16.1 points per game. He's also dished out 42 assists, topped only by freshman Anthony Pritchard, who paces the team with 56 assists.
Draine has started to heat up from beyond the arc after a slow start to his season. He scored a combined nine points in his first nine games, but in his last seven, he's scored 46 (6.6 per game). He is now shooting 41 percent both from the floor and from deep, and he's shot 50 percent over the last six games on 3-pointers, knocking down 11 after only going 4-of-15 (27 percent) in his first four games.
Wichita's star guard Tyson Etienne leads three Shockers in double figures, averaging 14.7 points per game. Morris Udeze scores 11.2 a game and leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 6.1 boards per game. Ricky Council IV and Dennis Dexter grab 5.5 and 5.2 boards per night, respectively. Council IV is also the third Shocker to average double figures, averaging 10.8 points per game.
After Tuesday's game, Tulsa will finish its two-game road trip with a rematch against the Temple Owls on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN+. The Hurricane then return to the Reynolds Center for its first matchup with ECU on Tuesday, Feb. 8.
