HOMECOMING CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF THE GOLDEN HURRICANE NICKNAME

TULSA, Okla. –– In the year of 1922 and month of October, the nickname "Golden Hurricane" was born for The University of Tulsa's football team. Tulsa celebrates the 100-year anniversary of the moniker this Homecoming weekend.
Tulsa hosts the SMU Mustangs on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 2:30 p.m. There will be "100 Year Golden Hurricane" shirts sold at the game.
As the story goes… a new head football coach, Howard Acher, saw great potential in his 1922 team and wanted to publicize it by creating a new identity with a new nickname. Since 1895, the school had been called by various titles depending upon the writer. Most common was the term "Kendallites" but they were also referred to as "Presbyterians," "Tigers," "Tulsans," "Orange and Black" and "Yellow Jackets." But, Acher wanted a distinctive tag for his team.
The press had claimed that the Tulsa football team blew through its opponents like a tornado, and after a remark in practice about 'roaring through opponents," Acher had seriously considered "Golden Tornadoes." But a check showed that Georgia Tech already had chosen that tag in 1917.
Heading into the Texas A&M game in Dallas, Acher still wanted a name for his team. From tornado, he evolved meteorologically to the hurricane.
A few days before leaving for Dallas, Acher asked his squad to vote on the name "Golden Hurricane," the gold being added because of the color of their new jerseys. The team approved and the "Golden Hurricane" nickname was born.
Tulsa won that first game as the Golden Hurricane by a score of 13-10.
