IRVING, TEXAS –– The University of Tulsa's Cormac Dalton and Chloe Hershenow claimed the men and women's American Athletic Conference Runner of the Year awards, the league announced today.
Dalton is the third Golden Hurricane men's runner in a row to receive the award, while Hershenow is the first Tulsa woman. The winners were decided by votes from member coaches.
"It's an incredible honor to win Runner of the Year," coach Taylor Gulley said. "It's not something we take lightly. I think the American Athletic Conference as a whole has grown really strong in cross country and there are some really good runners in the league. We are proud of both Chloe and Cormac."
Hershenow had a brilliant end to her redshirt sophomore campaign. She became the first Tulsa woman to win the individual American Athletic Conference title, blazing through the 6k course at Mohawk Park in 20:54.4. It was also the first individual conference title for a Tulsa woman since Alex Becker was crowned Conference USA champion in 2007.
Two weeks after capturing the conference title, Hershenow put on another spectacular performance at the Midwest Regional. She was with the front group for the entire race and nabbed fourth place in 20:12.4, less than a second behind second place. Her race earned her all-region honors and booked her spot at the NCAA Championships as an individual runner, where Hershenow finished 135th in 20:49.6
"I think it's a great honor for Chloe," Tulsa head coach Steve Gulley said. "It's well-deserved. She had a great season, but she was even more of a leader for these young ladies and this team than we've ever had, and the results showed it."
Dalton led an exciting Tulsa men's team who finished No. 9 in the country and had multiple runners who could win an event on any day. He earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championships, navigating the 10k course in Stillwater, Okla. In 29:16.0 to finish 15th.
A week prior, Dalton helped the Hurricane men win their second Midwest Regional team championship in school history. He finished second among Tulsa men and fourth overall in 29:42.1.
In Tulsa's ninth-consecutive American Athletic Conference title, 13th straight overall, Dalton was second on the team and in the race, running a time of 23:52.2. In both the regional and conference championships, Dalton was under half a second off the lead TU runner.
The Mullingar, Ireland redshirt senior also had top 20 finishes at the Cowboy Jamboree and Nuttycombe Invitational, two of the most competitive non-championship races of the season.
"We are incredibly excited for Cormac to win this award," Taylor Gulley said. "It's a testament to his growth and strength he's shown in yes two years at Tulsa. We probably have four guys that on any other year could have won it. It speaks to the team strength that these guys have built that we have multiple guys who are deserving of the award."
