Gamebook (TAMU-CC) | Gamebook (Texas Tech)

LUBBOCK, Texas
– The University of Tulsa softball team took one-of-two in its first game of the Texas Tech Invitational on Saturday at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock, Texas.

Tulsa jumped out to an early lead and took care of business against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 8-3 in the day's first game. The Golden Hurricane put up a valiant effort against Texas Tech in game two, fighting back from a four-run deficit to tie the game in the sixth, but eventually fell victim to a walk-off home run in an 8-5 loss.

Tulsa moves to 7-13 with the two games, while Texas Tech improves to 9-12, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi drops to 10-13.

Celeste Wood finished the two games 3-for-6 with four RBIs, while Rylee Keith went 4-for-6 with a triple, double and homerun, plating three runners.

Game 1

Tulsa jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, beating Texas A&M – Corpus Christi 8-3 in the opening game of the invitational.

The Golden Hurricane scored its eight runs on eight hits and took advantage of four errors from the Islanders. TAMU-CC scored three runs on five hits, while Tulsa committed just one error. Celeste Wood finished the first game 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Rylee Keith finished 3-for-3 with a single, double and home run with one RBI.

Samantha Pochop (4-5) went the distance, giving up three runs on five hits, walking five and striking out 10.

Pochop set the Islanders down in order in the top of the first. Haley Morgan earned a walk to get things started for Tulsa in the bottom of the frame. She then stole second and got to third on an error. Wood then hit her eighth double of the season on a 3-2 count to drive in the first run. Kylee Nash then singled through the right side and Wood came around to make it 2-0.

The Hurricane loaded the bases with two outs and again it was Wood who delivered the key hit, driving in her second run of the morning, and when the centerfielder mishandled the single, it allowed Rylee Keith to come around and score to give Tulsa a 4-0 advantage.

TAMU-CC got on the board in the top of the third after a walk, single and error loaded the bases with nobody out. Another single drove in two and suddenly it was 4-2 and the Islanders had two on with nobody out. Pochop settled down and got the next two batters top pop out, and then struck out the final batter to end the inning.

After a pair of scoreless half innings, Tulsa got one of its runs back in the fourth thanks to Rylee Keith's second home run of the season. Facing an 0-1 count with one out, Keith put the next pitch over the left center wall to give Tulsa a 5-2 advantage.

Tulsa picked up another insurance run in the fifth inning thanks to MaKayla Jackson pinch hitting and brining in a run with a single. Wood reached base and got to second via an error, and then moved to third on a groundout, setting up Jackson's RBI.

In the top of the six, the Islanders had a mini two-out rally as a batter got hit by a pitch. The next hitter doubled to right field, driving in the runner from first to make it 6-3. Pochop walked her next opponent but got the third out on a popup to end the threat.

TU responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Skaggs was hit on an 0-2 count to put the leadoff on base. Keith doubled to center, putting both runners in scoring position. A throwing error allowed a pinch-running Callie Davis to score. And Tulsa scored its final run on a sac-fly from Celeste Wood, as Morgan scored to give Tulsa its 8-3 win.

Game 2

Tulsa battled back late from a four-run deficit in the sixth, but a walk-off home run gave Texas Tech an 8-5 victory in the second game on Saturday afternoon.

The Hurricane scored five runs on 10 hits and had one error, while Texas Tech scored eight runs on 12 hits with zero errors. Sara Llamas-Howell (1-3) picked up the loss after pitching 2.2 innings in relief. Makenzie Brown started in the circle and went 3.2 innings. She was responsible for the first five runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out three.

Tulsa trailed 5-1 after five innings. The only Hurricane run to that point came in the top of the third when Wood doubled in Morgan with two away. Texas Tech scored two in the first with a home run, one in the second and two in the fourth to build its lead.

Kylee Nash doubled to leadoff the big sixth inning. After a groundout advanced her to third, Claira Skaggs walked, forcing the starting pitcher from the circle. An infield single from Imani Edwards and then a wild pitch brought in a run to make it 5-2. Up came Rylee Keith, who tripled to left on the first pitch she saw to bring in two runs.

Kailyn Bearpaw stepped up next. She was 2-for-2 on the afternoon heading into the at-bat and continued her perfect streak, smash a double to right to tie the game at 5. However, two strikeouts in three batters halted the Tulsa run and kept the game tied.

In the bottom of the sixth, Llamas-Howell worked through a one-out single to shut down the Red Raiders and give the Hurricane another shot. Tulsa got singles with one out and two out to get runners on base but couldn't find the big hit needed to plate a run.

Texas Tech lined out to begin the bottom of the seventh. A single and a walk set up the 3-run home run on a 3-2 count in the ninth pitch of the at-bat that lifted the Red Raiders to victory.

Tulsa will finish the Texas Tech Invitational with a pair of games on Sunday morning. The Hurricane will rematch Texas A&M – Corpus Christi at 10 a.m. before finishing the weekend with another game against the hosts, Texas Tech, at 3:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
