MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Tulsa softball team earned its first series win of the conference season with a doubleheader split against the University of Memphis at Tiger Softball Complex on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead in game one and held off the Hurricane to win 5-3. Tulsa responded with a 1-0 win in game two, scoring in the final inning as Samantha Pochop outdueled the Tigers pitching staff.
Pochop finishes the weekend 2-0 with 12 strikeouts. Kylie Norwood powered the Tulsa offense in the series, logging two home runs and six RBIs.
Tulsa moves to 14-24-1 and 3-5-1 in the American Athletic Conference, while Memphis ends the weekend 16-28, 2-10 AAC. Friday's games were played as a doubleheader because of expected inclement weather on Saturday.
Game 1
The Golden Hurricane fell behind in the opening innings and was unable to rally, falling 5-3 in the day's opening game.
The Tigers scored three in the first and a pair of runs in the second to take an early 5-0 lead. Kylie Norwood supplied all the runs for the Hurricane with a three-run blast with one out in the fifth. It was her second three-run homer in as many days and second long ball on the season.
After the home run, an error and stolen base allowed Haley Morgan to reach second. But a line drive turned into a double play, ending the opportunity of an even bigger inning.
Tulsa's last chance started with a mini two-out rally. MaKayla Jackson was hit by a pitch to keep the game alive and was subsequently taken out for a pinch runner. Norwood singled to put runners on the corner, but Morgan couldn't get enough on the ball and flew out to right, ending the game.
Kylee Nash (2-4) had the start and took the loss, throwing one inning and allowing three runs on three hits. Makenzie Brown came on in relief and went the rest of the way, giving up two runs in her first inning before allowing just one more hit the rest of the way. She finished with five innings of work, three strikeouts and three walks.
Kailey Hilderbrand (3-1) earned the win for Memphis after going 4.1 innings and allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks. Mikayla Hoschak picked up the save after pitching 2.2 innings in relief and allowing just one hit.
Game 2
Samantha Pochop went the distance allowing only two hits and leading Tulsa to a narrow 1-0 win to take the series.
The senior hurler improved to 8-11 on the season. She struck out three and set the Tigers down in order four times. At one point, Pochop faced 12 consecutive batters without allowing a baserunner.
The Hurricane had plenty of opportunities to take control of the game early on. Tulsa outhit Memphis 6-2 and had the bases loaded on three different occasions, but only converted once, stranding 11 runners.
TU loaded the bases in the first inning with only one out, but a strikeout and ground out allowed the Tigers to escape the jam. The Hurricane wasted a leadoff double in the second, grounding out and flying out twice.
Again, in the sixth, the Hurricane managed to load the bases. The first two batters reached, but two consecutive pop-ups that didn't leave the infield put the inning in danger. After an infield single, another pop up ended the opportunity.
Tulsa finally broke through in the top of the seventh. Jackson got things started with a single up the middle. Callie Davis pinch ran for her and beat the throw on a fielder's choice to second. Kennedy Cramer was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.
After a strikeout, junior catcher Rylee Keith stepped to the plate. She battled to a 3-2 count before ripping a single through the left side to bring Davis in and give Tulsa the 1-0 lead.
That was all Pochop would need as she caused two fly outs and a pop out to put the Tigers away.
After nearly a month away from home, Tulsa returns to the Collins Family Softball Complex to host No. 6 Oklahoma State on Wednesday, April 20. Tulsa will then welcome South Florida over the weekend. First pitch for the series against Oklahoma State is set for 5 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
