GREENVILLE, N.C. –– The University of Tulsa softball team allowed five runs in the final three innings in a 5-2 loss to the No. 4 seed Houston in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Softball Championship on Thursday morning.
The Cougars will advance to the semifinals to take on the top-seeded UCF Knights.
The Golden Hurricane held a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning when the Cougars finally got to Samantha Pochop with a solo home run with two outs. A double followed, but Pochop got the next batter to ground out.
The senior finished the game with 5.1 innings pitched, five runs, all earned, three walks and two strikeouts. Kylee Nash entered to pitch the end of sixth, facing two batters and striking out one.
Houston tied the game in the fifth after a one-out double with a runner on second. A leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth immediately put Houston in business. After a ground out advanced the runner to third, the Cougars took the lead on a triple to right. The next batter homered well over the wall in left, and Houston had a commanding 5-2 advantage.
Celeste Wood singled with one out in the seventh, and Riley Keith got on as she was hit by a pitch with two outs, bringing the tying run to the plate. Unfortunately, a hard-hit ground ball was unable to get through the infield and Houston put the game away.
The Hurricane struck first in the second inning. Claira Skaggs drew a leadoff walk and moved to second after MaKayla Jackson did the same with one away. Gracie Jarvis hit a ground ball to first on a check-swing. The first baseman stepped on the bag for one and caught Jackson in a rundown. However, she kept the play alive long enough for Skaggs to touch home before the final out, giving TU the 1-0 lead.
Celeste Wood doubled Tulsa's lead in the top of the fourth as she led the inning with a home run. But that would be the last run the Hurricane would score. Tulsa would load the bases in the fourth and sixth innings with two outs, but each time were unable to deliver the big hit.
Wood, Kylie Norwood and Imani Edwards each had two hits on the morning. Haley Morgan reached base three times thanks to three hit-by-pitches. The Hurricane outhit the Cougars 7-6, but the difference was in runners left on base as Tulsa stranded 12 while Houston only left three.
Tulsa finishes its season with an 18-30-1 record, 7-9-1 in conference play, while Houston improves to 27-26-1.
