LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The sixth-seeded Golden Hurricane battled to the final whistle, but came up short in a 2-1 loss to the third-seeded SMU Mustangs in the quarterfinal round of The American Athletic Conference Championship on Tuesday afternoon.
Tulsa concludes the season with a 5-9-5 record and went 3-2-4 in conference play. SMU improves to 10-5-1 on the season and move on to the semifinal of The American Championship.
The loss ends a season that saw the Hurricane bounce back from an 0-6 start to finish 5-3-5 and make the American Athletic Conference Championship for the first time since 2015. Jordan Frederick collected her fifth goal of the season in the match.
How it Happened
Much like the earlier meeting in Dallas back in September, the Mustangs and Golden Hurricane remained scoreless through the first half. SMU had the majority of possession and outshot Tulsa 8-5 in the opening half, but Tulsa forced two saves while Tatum Sanders was only called into action once.
The Mustangs opened the scoring eight minutes into the second half. Ashlyn Fernandez saved an SMU shot off the goal line, but Nyah Rose was able to get to the rebound first for SMU and bury the second chance to put SMU up.
SMU doubled its lead in the 71st minute, and again it was Rose as she picked up a brace. The freshman drove into the box and was able to finish with her right foot into the bottom left hand corner to go up 2-0.
Tulsa didn't fold, however, just as they hadn't all season. With a little more than 13 minutes to play, Jordan Frederick collected a poor SMU clearance at the top of the box. She cut to her left a little behind the penalty mark and unleashed a left-footed strike that flew past the keeper to cut the lead to 2-1.
Chasing the lead the remainder of the game, Tulsa had a couple of opportunities, but SMU was able to ride out the advantage and take the win 2-1.
