Box Score (PDF)
TULSA, Okla. – A two-run home run off the bat of Rachel Becker in the top of the ninth proved the difference in No. 2 Oklahoma State's 3-1 extra innings win over the University of Tulsa in front of a sold-out crowd at Collins Family Softball Complex on Wednesday evening.
The Golden Hurricane (14-16) was without head coach Crissy Strimple against the Cowgirls (30-2). Strimple was serving a one-game suspension stemming from a postgame ejection following the loss to Central Arkansas. Sandra Moore served as the head coach against OSU.
Tulsa sent the game to extra innings with a single through the right side from Rylee Keith. Pinch runner Kennedy Cramer raced around third and barely beat the throw home to tie the game.
Maura Moore (8-6) was tagged with the loss, but the sophomore spun a brilliant game against the high-powered Cowgirls offense. Moore pitched 8.2 innings, allowing three runs and nine hits while striking out six batters. She threw 152 pitches and kept the Cowgirls off the board until the sixth inning.
Kylee Nash entered to get the final out of the ninth after the deciding home run. While only featuring for a little bit in the circle, Nash added a pair of hits at the plate, including a vital seventh inning single that helped Tulsa tie the game.
Lexi Kilfoyl (9-1) blew her save opportunity but stayed in the game to eventually collect the win for Oklahoma State. Kyra Aycock had the start and pitched six innings of shutout ball. She allowed five hits and struck out four.
MacKenzie Denson went 3-for-4 for the Hurricane and almost beat the throw in her lone out. Imani Edwards doubled and had a pair of hits, joining Nash and Denson as Tulsa hitters with a multi-hit game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tulsa's defense proved its intentions to make life difficult on the Cowgirls batters from the start. With a runner on second and two outs in the opening frame, Kailyn Bearpaw made a diving catch in right, which saved a run and ended the threat.
Two innings later, it was again the Tulsa defense adding to the highlight reel. A Cowgirl stood on second with one away when Celeste Wood collected a sharply hit ground ball. After looking the runner back to second, she fired over to Claira Skaggs at first for the out. As Wood threw, the runner broke for third, but Edwards was alert and had the bag covered as Skaggs connected with the Tulsa shortstop to nab the runner and complete the double play.
In the fourth, the Cowgirls looked to be in position to strike. A hit batter and a fielding error with one out had runners at first and second. But Moore didn't flinch, getting a foul out to first and then striking out a Cowgirl looking to end the inning.
Oklahoma State broke the deadlock in the sixth. Leading off the inning, Micaela Wark hit a deep fly to center that just landed in the bushes over the fence, just beyond the reach of a leaping Haley Morgan to give the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead. But again, Tulsa's defense didn't let up. Edwards took away another hit with a lunging catch on a line drive to short for the second out. That play was important as the next batter doubled, which might have added an insurance run.
The Hurricane came to bat in the seventh needing a run to tie the game. Wood stepped to the plate one out and smashed a ground ball down the third base line. The third baseman was able to get a glove on the ball to knock it down, but her throw was not in time. Nash followed with her second hit of the day to move the pinch running Cramer to second. This allowed Keith to tie the game with her single to right. Tulsa had the winning run at second but was unable to bring her home as the game was sent to extra innings.
In the eighth, the Cowgirls went down in order. Edwards doubled with one away for Tulsa, but Kilfoyl struck out the next two batters to send it to the ninth.
The Cowgirls got a leadoff single before a wild pitch moved her to second. With one out, it was Denson's turn to make a highlight play defensively as she made a sliding snow cone catch to take away a hit. However, the Rachel Becker hammered a 1-1 pitch well over the wall in center for the decisive runs in the next at-bat.
