TULSA, Okla. – A big seventh inning for the 23rd-ranked Missouri Tigers ended any chance of a Tulsa comeback as the Golden Hurricane softball team fell 13-1 in the final game of the TU/OSU Invitational at the Collins Family Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Tulsa ends the weekend with a 10-10 record after going 3-2 in the invitational while Missouri improved to 15-6 with the win.
Â
Sophomore Maura Moore (5-3) started and took the loss in the circle, tossing 4.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two. Kylee Nash stepped in for relief and pitched two and a third. She struck out three and walked four, allowing eight earned runs, the majority coming in the seventh. Kaiya Luneckas got the last two outs allowing two runs.
Â
Claira Skaggs continued her spectacular weekend with a RBI single, the lone run of the game for Tulsa. Nash finished 2-for-2 with a double, the only Hurricane to have an extra base hit and multi-hit game.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
The Hurricane came out swinging with three hits in the first inning but had nothing to show for it. A Kailyn Bearpaw single to left with one out sent Imani Edwards sprinting home, but a perfect strike from the left fielder beat the shortstop and prevented Tulsa from taking an early lead.
Â
Missouri broke the deadlock in the third, starting with a leadoff double. The batter was sacrificed over and then a single up the middle made it 1-0. Kara Daly, who homered twice in the first meeting, doubled in two more later in the inning, but was caught trying to advance to third.
Â
The Tigers added to its lead in the fifth inning. A single and walk and then a double steal put two runners in scoring position before a groundout brought in the fourth run of the game.
Â
Skaggs helped Tulsa get on the board in the sixth. Celeste Wood walked to start the inning, advanced on a ground out and moved to third on a wild pitch, the first runner Tulsa had in scoring position since the second inning. Skaggs stepped in and singled up the middle to bring Wood home and cut the deficit to 4-1.
Â
The top of seventh inning went about as poorly as possible for the Hurricane and ended any hope of a comeback. Three straight singles loaded the bags before a sacrifice fly made the score 5-1. A double to right and then another single added three more runs.
Â
Five of the next six batters were walked, and another was hit by a pitch, adding four more runs before another sacrifice fly gave Missouri nine runs for the inning and 13 for the game.
