TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa softball team trailed the UCF Knights heading into the bottom of the seventh but scored three runs to win 5-4 in front of 524 cheering fans at the Collins Family Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The win helped Tulsa to improve to 17-22, 3-5 in The American. The Golden Hurricane also snapped a five-game losing streak in conference play and six games overall. UCF fell to 26-19 and 5-3 in The American.
Tulsa tied the game in the seventh on a two-RBI single from Haley Morgan. Four batters later, Claira Skaggs stepped in with the bases loaded and two outs. The sophomore was patient at the plate and drew a five pitch walk to bring in Tara Hall and send the Hurricane team and fans into celebration.
Kylee Nash (7-11) was credited with the win after going a full 7.0 innings. The junior fanned seven batters and allowed four runs, only one earned, on 10 hits. She also drew an important walk in the seventh inning as a batter.
Grace Jewell (8-6) took the loss after surrendering the lead late in the seventh. She tossed 6.0 innings and allowed all five Tulsa runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four. After a game-tying single, Angelina DeVoe entered the circle and finished the game. She got two outs and then walked two, which included the winning run.
Morgan went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Imani Edwards also had a two-hit performance, driving in a run early in the contest. Kailyn Bearpaw and Skaggs each picked up an RBI in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Just like Friday, it was Morgan who scored to give the Hurricane the lead in the opening frame. The senior doubled to center the lead off the bottom of the first. With one away, Edwards lined a single to center and Morgan came racing around third. The throw beat her, but the senior center fielder expertly slid around the tag to score.
A two-out error allowed the Knights to grab the lead in the top of the third. A single and a walk helped UCF put two on with two away. The next batter lifted a fly ball to right that was dropped, allowing the tying run to score. Savannah Adams then drove in a pair of runs as she singled down the line in right to give UCF a 3-1 advantage
MacKenzie Denson drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the sixth, snapping a streak of seven consecutive retired Tulsa batters. She advanced to second on a ground out. Bearpaw then hit a hot shot to third that snuck by into left, bringing in Denson to cut the deficit to 3-2.
UCF got the run back in the top of the seventh. The first two batters reached on a single and walk. After a strikeout, a batter hit into a fielder's choice. Skaggs made the tag on the lead runner for the second out, but her throw to first sailed wide and allowed the runners to advance. A single brought in another run to make the score 4-2.
Celeste Wood came to bat for the first time in the game in the seventh, drawing a leadoff walk to put a runner on. Emma Vickrey, representing the tying run, singled up the middle and then advanced to second after the center fielder misplayed the ball as it came to her. Wood moved to third as Hall came in to pinch run for Vickrey. Nash came to bat with a chance to tie the game and help herself out, but instead worked a walk and loaded the bases for Morgan.
As she's done so many times in the past, Morgan came up big for the Hurricane, hitting a hot shot up the middle the short stop couldn't get to, scoring a pair and tying the game at four. Denson sacrificed the winning run to third. With two outs, Bearpaw drew a walk to load the bags and then Skaggs played the hero, earning a five-pitch walk to win the game.
