Tulsa Women Blanked by Charlotte

10/20/2024 4:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer

TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa women's soccer team fell 2-0 to the Charlotte 49ers Sunday afternoon at home in the Hurricane Soccer Stadium. The Golden Hurricane fell to 7-7-2 overall and 3-4-0 in American Athletic Conference action, while the '9ers grabbed their first conference win and moved to 2-7-6 overall and 1-2-4 in league play.

Charlotte's Emma Wakeman had a monster game in goal for the 49ers as she saved the ball eight times. Tulsa had 12 shots overall, but none could find their way home.

Redshirt junior forward Hannah Chance saw most of the opportunities to score as she finished with five shots with three going towards the poles. One of her attempts would have scored, but the ball bounced off the right pole and out of play. A few inches would have made a difference in Tulsa's eventual loss.

Overall, the 49ers had 13 shots and five attempts toward the goal, while Tulsa had 12 shots and eight on target.

The Tulsa women will head to Birmingham, Ala., to take on UAB (5-4-4, 2-2-3 AAC) Thursday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. before returning for the home finale against South Florida (9-2-3, 4-1-2 AAC) Sunday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m.

How it Happened
Much of the first half was scoreless as Charlotte notched five shots with three shots on goal, and Tulsa had three shots with two on goal. It wasn't until less than a minute remained in the half when the 49ers' Sydney Smith fielded a pass from Laura Cate Westerbeek, who received the ball off a throw-in by Serena Spitz, in the 44th minute and launched the ball from near midfield and through the TU net just under the crossbar and over the outstretched hands of Tatum Sanders to go up 1-0 before the break.

The second half looked to be a potential scoreless defensive battle until the 49ers put the nail in the coffin with an 87th-minute goal by Macey Bader, who sent the ball into the right side of the Tulsa net from within the penalty area. From there, Tulsa had no time to mount a comeback as time expired.
