SAN MARCOS, Texas – The University of Tulsa softball team closed the weekend with a 5-1 loss to Sam Houston on Sunday in the TXST Tournament.
The Hurricane (5-4, 0-0 AAC) finished the weekend 3-2 with two wins over Texas State and a win against Northern Colorado. Sam Houston (2-5, 0-0 CUSA) picked up its second win in a row after knocking off Northern Colorado last night.
Alexa Hopkins (0-1) was in the circle for the Golden Hurricane and pitched a good game, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing two runs, none earned, on three hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout. Maura Moore threw an inning of relief and was responsible for three runs on a long ball in the sixth. Nash tossed the final inning and a third, striking out one, walking one and giving up a single hit.
Amy Abke (1-0) got the call for the Bearkats in the circle, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing just one run and only one hit after the second inning. She walked two and struck out three Tulsa batters. Daryn Grams pitched the seventh and tossed a clean inning with a strikeout.
At the plate, Celeste Wood had Tulsa's lone RBI, driving in Abby Jones with a double in the second. No Tulsa players had multiple hits in the game. Shortstop Morgan Holliday did the damage for Sam Houston with a double and three-run home run, scoring two runs as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED – SAM HOUSTON 5, TULSA 1
Sam Houston threatened in the first inning, getting its first two runners on and advancing both into scoring position on a ground out. Imani Edwards saved a run by connecting with Maci Cole on a ground ball to catch a runner trying to score, and then a ground out to Celeste Wood at first ended the inning.
The Hurricane broke the deadlock in the bottom of the second. Claira Skaggs led the inning with a single to left but was erased when Abby Jones reached on a fielder's choice. Jones stole second on a strikeout bringing Wood to the plate with two outs. Wood came through with a double in the gap between left and center, bringing home Jones. She advanced to third on a passed ball, but a strikeout left her stranded.
From there, the Hurricane would get a single in the third and that would be it for hits. The only other base runner would come on an error in the bottom of the fourth and a walked batter in the fifth.
The Bearkats would finally respond in the top of the fifth. A one out double then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. After another double with two outs, Maura Moore was brought in to pitch. However, Ellie Grill stepped up and delivered an RBI single to put SH up 2-1 on the Golden Hurricane.
Sam Houston widened its lead in the top of the sixth, with most of the damage coming with two outs. A one-out walk and two-out hit batter put two on for Morgan Holliday. The Bearkat shortstop got down in the count 0-2 before lifting a home run to left field to put her team ahead 5-2. The final six Tulsa batters went down in order to end the game.
