DENTON, Texas – A solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning was the lone run as the Golden Hurricane fell 1-0 in extra innings to North Texas in game one of a three-game series Friday night at Lovelace Stadium.
It was a pitcher's duel on Friday as neither Tulsa (19-9, 5-2 The American) nor UNT (16-12, 6-1 The American) could seem to get anything going offensively. Maura Moore (8-5) took the loss after her fifth complete game of the season. The junior didn't take long to get through the batters, tossing just 92 pitches in 7.0 innings of work. She didn't walk a batter and allowed only five hits, including the game-deciding long ball. Moore struck out four batters and threw 61 strikes in the ballgame.
Mackenzie Childers (6-3) was her opponent in the circle. The North Texas pitcher spun 8.0 innings of 4-hit softball. She also didn't walk a batter and struck out seven Hurricane, which tied for second most this season by an opposing pitcher. Neither team committed an error in Friday's ballgame.
Celeste Wood had two of Tulsa's four hits. She was thrown out trying to extend a single to a double to lead off the third, just getting beat by the throw. Claira Skaggs and Kailyn Bearpaw had the other two, both in the fifth inning.
North Texas had five hits from five different batters, none bigger than Molly Rainy's walk-off solo home run on the first pitch of the eighth.
NORTH TEXAS 1, TULSA 0
North Texas had the first three hits of the game. In the bottom of the second, the Mean Green put runners on second and third with one out, but Maura Moore got a foul out to MacKenzie Denson in left, who quickly got the ball in to keep the runner at third. A popup to second ended the threat.
Although the Hurricane got its first hit in the third, which was erased stretching for two, the best opportunity to score came in the fifth. Claira Skaggs singled to lead the inning, and then Kailyn Bearpaw singled with one out to put two on. However, a popup and strikeout kept TU off the board.
Tulsa went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings, and an eighth inning Celeste Wood single with one out was left stranded. As for the Mean Green, UNT went down in order in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, Molly Rainey, batting in the eighth spot, lined the first pitch she saw off the light post in right field, ending the game.
