Tulsa Comes Up Short at #5 Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Golden Hurricane softball team battled to the last out but came up short 3-2 against No. 5 Oklahoma State in a rematch in Cowgirls Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Tulsa (25-13, 10-5 The American) never the tying run in scoring position before a runner leaving early call ended the game. The Cowgirls (34-6, 12-3 BIG XII) posted a three-run third but were kept off the board the rest of the way and only collected two hits in the final three innings.

Anneca Anderson (7-3) got the start and was tagged with the loss but pitched well in the circle. The freshman allowed three runs on four hits with four strikeouts in her 4.0 innings of work. Kylee Nash came on in relief for the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out a pair.

Haley Morgan collected her third home run of the season with a solo shot in the seventh to get Tulsa within a run. Abby Jones had Tulsa's other RBI with a single in the fifth that scored Imani Edwards. Edwards finished the game with two hits. First baseman Celeste Wood had TU's other extra-base hit with a double in the fourth inning.

Tulsa loaded the bases on a trio of walks in the second inning, but it was the top of the third before the Hurricane collected the first hit of the game. MacKenzie Denson singled through the right side to lead the inning. Imani Edwards bunted for a single and Tulsa seemed to threaten, until Denson was ruled out at second due to the look-back rule. The next two batters grounded out to end the opportunity.

Oklahoma State rode the momentum switch to the bottom of the frame. The leadoff batter was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt. Jilyen Poullard singled to left to bring in the first run of the game. Later in the frame, Rosie Davis doubled to score two more. MacKenzie Denson and Maci Cole combined to nail a runner at third and end the inning with the Cowgirls leading 3-0.

A leadoff walk from Abby Jones and Celeste Wood one-out double had two in scoring position in the top of the fourth. But back-to-back groundouts kept the Hurricane off the board.

TU got on the board in the fifth. Edwards singled and then a walk to Haley Morgan had two on with two out. Jones stepped in and singed to left, bringing in Edwards to cut the deficit to 3-1.

In the seventh, the first two batters were retired before Morgan got Tulsa within a run, lining a home run over the wall in right. Kailyn Bearpaw and Jones kept the game alive with consecutive walks. But the Hurricane did not get a chance to tie the game as midway through Maci Cole's at-bat, a review judged Tulsa to have left second early, ending the game.

Next up for the Golden Hurricane is a conference home series against East Carolina this weekend. The three-game series will begin with a 5 p.m. first pitch on Friday. All three games will air on ESPN+.
