TU Mourns Loss of Former Tennis & Golf Coach Don Zimmerman

TULSA, Okla. –– Don Zimmerman, former University of Tulsa tennis and golf coach, died on Tuesday, April 23, at the age of 86, in Kansas City, Mo. Zimmerman coached the TU men's tennis team from 1971-77 and was also the head men's golf coach for four years (1982-86).
 
'Z' and 'Z-Man', as he was commonly known by students and athletes alike, joined The University of Tulsa as an assistant professor of health, physical education and recreation in December 1970 and shortly thereafter became the tennis coach. In six years, Zimmerman led the Golden Hurricane tennis program to an overall 120-76 record for a .612 winning percentage. His final season coaching tennis came in 1977.
 
In 1982, Zimmerman took over as head coach of the men's golf program and coached the Hurricane for four seasons.

Born in Oklahoma City in 1937, Zimmerman graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1955 and received a bachelor's degree from Tulsa in 1963 and master's degree in 1967, both in physical education. Zimmerman served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1955-59, primarily as a drill sergeant at 29 Palms, California.
