BOCA RATON, Fla. – Haley Morgan and Maci Cole each homered on Saturday, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Hurricane fell 8-2 at Florida Atlantic in the second game of the weekend series.
Tulsa drops to 29-21 (14-12 The American) on the season, while FAU improves to 40-13 (20-6 The American) clinching a 40-win season and top two spot in the conference tournament. A win tomorrow would give the Owls the top seed.
The game was tight until a four-run bottom of the fifth turned a one-run FAU lead into a five-run lead. The first six batters reached safely, making it two games in a row where multiple runs were scored before Tulsa recorded the first out of the frame.
Anneca Anderson (8-6) got the start and took the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits with three walks and a strikeout over 4.0 innings of work. Alexa Hopkins allowed just a single hit in her two innings and was tagged for one run.
Morgan homered for the fourth time this season with a solo shot to left in the first inning. Cole followed with a solo shot in the fifth. MacKenzie Denson singled for Tulsa's only other hit in the ballgame.
Freshman Anneca Anderson played in the designated player position and smashed her first home run of her collegiate career in the second inning, a three-run blast over the wall in left. Kailyn Bearpaw and Haley Morgan each had two hit games with Bearpaw also reaching on a walk and Morgan was hit by a pitch for an RBI in the sixth. Claira Skaggs drove in a pair of runs and MacKenzie Denson also had an RBI single.
FLORIDA ATLANTIC 8, TULSA 2
Senior center fielder Haley Morgan gave Tulsa an early lead with a first inning home run to left field. It was the second game in a row where the Golden Hurricane struck first.
The Owls responded in the bottom frame after a walk and a hit batter put two on with one away. Kamryn Jackson lifted a three-run blast to center field to give the Owls the 3-1 lead after one.
The score would remain that way until the fifth, when second baseman Maci Cole stepped in to lead off the top of the inning. Cole hit an opposite field home run over the wall in right to cute the TU deficit to one. The Hurricane got two more on in the frame, but they were left stranded in what would prove to be Tulsa's last good opportunity.
The Owls took command of the game in the bottom of the frame, with the first six batters reaching safely, plating three runs to go up 6-2. Alexa Hopkins took over in the circle for Anneca Anderson and limited the damage. After hitting a batter to load the bases, she struck out the next Owl. A sacrifice fly brought in a run to make the score 7-2, but a ground out to Imani Edwards left the bags loaded.
The Owls scored their final run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth for the 8-2 final score.
