TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa (9-5-5, 4-3-3) secured a decisive 4-0 victory over Rice (9-3-5, 3-2-5) on Thursday at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium in their final regular season game. Tulsa's defense was impenetrable, securing only the third shutout against Rice this season, with the other two being losses to ranked teams.
The first half started with Tulsa establishing an early lead against Rice. Maggie SymSmith, who scored her fourth goal and second gamewinner of the year, found the net in the 14th minute, assisted by Natalie Hernandez, marking her fifth assist of the season, putting Tulsa ahead 1-0. The Owls' Allie Love attempted to equalize in the 15th minute, but her shot was saved by senior Tatum Sanders, Tulsa's goalkeeper. The Golden Hurricane extended their lead to 2-0 in the 42nd minute with a goal from Addison Castleberry, her third of the season, assisted by Kaylyn Simmons. Tulsa maintained control throughout the half, ending with a two-goal advantage.
Hannah Chance extended Tulsa's lead early in the second half with a goal in the 50th minute, her fourth of the season, assisted by Ady Bechtel, who registered her seventh assist of the season. Sanders was instrumental for the Golden Hurricane, making key saves, including one against Dayo Tennyson's shot in the 58th minute. Despite multiple corner kicks and attempts from the Owls, Tulsa's defense held firm. Blaine Schutte secured the victory for Tulsa with her ninth goal of the season in the 85th minute, assisted by Jordan Frederick, who earned her eighth assist of the season and 26th of her career, finalizing a 4-0 win. Notably, there were no repeat points for any player for Tulsa in the game, as all assists and goals came from different players.
"I think coming into this game we knew it was a really big opportunity for us to do something that the program has never done before and so our biggest thing is forget about the mistakes, forget about us not getting the result that we wanted to, and do what we need to do tonight and that's what we did," said SymSmith after Tulsa's victory over Rice.
Tulsa improved to 9-5-5 overall and 4-3-3 in conference play. Rice moved to 9-3-5 overall and 3-2-5 in the conference standings.
