Tulsa Victorious Over UAB on Senior Night

10/9/2025 9:50:00 PM | Women's Soccer

TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa (7-4-4, 2-2-2) secured a 1-0 victory over the University of Alabama at Birmingham (3-4-6, 0-2-3) on Thursday night at Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium.

Tulsa's lone goal, a game-winner, was scored in the second half, marking their 21st goal in the second half this season, and further extending their record of outscoring opponents by 11 in that period. Meanwhile, their defense held the Blazers scoreless with four saves.

Tulsa and UAB engaged in a defensive battle during the first half, with neither team able to find the back of the net. Tulsa's Tatum Sanders made a crucial save against UAB's Njeri Lewis in the 6th minute, while Leah Parsons of UAB denied a close-range attempt from Piper Szafranski at the 24th minute. Both teams managed multiple shots, with the Golden Hurricane attempting seven and the Blazers recording eight, but accuracy eluded both sides as shots frequently sailed wide or were saved. The half concluded with a scoreless draw, setting the stage for a competitive second half.

Blaine Schutte scored the decisive goal in the 79th minute, her eighth of the season, assisted by Jordan Frederick and Ady Bechtel, breaking the deadlock against UAB. This assist marked Frederick's 25th of her career, placing her second in program history, and also tied her for fourth in the nation for total points. Earlier in the half, both teams struggled to break through the defenses, with Bechtel, marking her tenth career assist, and Addison Castleberry both having shots saved by Parsons. UAB's offense was similarly thwarted by Sanders, who saved attempts from Abbey Burns and Lauren Lucero. The match saw a flurry of fouls and yellow cards, culminating in the Golden Hurricane's narrow 1-0 victory at the end of regulation.

"To come back home on senior night to get the 1-0 win, it feels really good and to do it for our seniors, it's amazing," said Schutte following Tulsa's narrow victory over the Blazers, "I always focus on the next touch and I make sure I connect the next pass and I go from there and I got, I got one, so it works."

Tulsa improved to 7-4-4 overall and held a 2-2-2 record in conference play. The Blazers fell to 3-4-6 overall with a 0-2-3 record in conference.

Looking ahead, Tulsa will travel to Denton, Texas, to take on North Texas in an afternoon matchup on October 12. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
