NORMAN, Okla. – The Golden Hurricane softball team led by a run late in Monday's contest, but a six-run sixth inning handed Tulsa a 9-4 loss to Bowling Green at Marita Hynes Field.
Tulsa fell to 6-8 on the season, while the Falcons improved to 3-7, picking up their first win of the weekend. Tulsa finishes the OU Tournament with a 1-3 record.
Abby Hayes got the ball in the circle on Monday. The junior pitcher spun four innings of two-run softball. She allowed five hits and struck out a batter. Alexa Hopkins, Brinly Maples and Katie Dunakin combined to pitch the other two innings. Hopkins (0-1) took the loss in her 1.1 innings of work. She allowed four runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Annika Dill and Claira Skaggs picked up the big hits in the game. They went back-to-back with doubles. Dill drove in one run and Skaggs picked up two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tulsa got runners into scoring positions in the first and second innings, including advancing Celeste Wood to third in the first, but it was the Falcons who struck first and broke the deadlock in the bottom of the third.
Addie Martin led off the frame with a solo home run to left center, putting Bowling Green up ahead 1-0.
Tulsa was held to hitless until the fifth inning, when TU's offense woke up. After two quick outs, Faith Russell recorded Tulsa's first hit with a single to third. Wood picked up an infield single to put two on. Dill followed with an RBI double to left, scoring Russell and tying the game. Skaggs ripped a double of her on down the left field line to score both Wood and Dill as suddenly Tulsa led 3-1.
Hopkins took over for Hayes in the bottom of the fifth after a leadoff single. Following a second single, Hopkins got a strikeout and a groundout, putting runners at first and second with two out. The Falcons got a big double off the bat of Taylor Behrendt to tie the game at three.
The Hurricane retook the lead in the sixth for the final time. Amber Turner drew a leadoff walk and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Turner advanced to third thanks to a wild pitch and scored on Holcomb's groundout to third, putting TU back ahead 4-0.
The game fell apart for Tulsa in the bottom of the frame. A walk followed a leadoff strikeout. That would be the last out until the Falcons scored six more runs. A Kendall Mathews triple tied the game at 4-4 and put the leading run 60 feet away. It didn't take long for the Falcons to take the lead back with a single up the middle.
A hit batter and a walk loaded the bags. Cameron Kaufman cleared the bases with a double to blow the game open, 8-4 BGSU. A pinch runner for Kaufman moved to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on a single to give the Falcons the 9-4 lead.
Skaggs singled with two outs in the seventh, advancing to second as the left fielder misplayed the ball. But there would be no two-out miracle for the Hurricane as a foul out ended the game.
