TU hosts South Dakota State in Tuesday home opener
TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa softball team (5-5) stays in-state for the third weekend of softball beginning on Saturday with the OU Tournament. The Golden Hurricane will face No. 2 Oklahoma, Abilene Christian and a pair of games with Bowling Green. Tulsa then heads to the Collins Family Softball Complex for its home opener against South Dakota State on Tuesday afternoon.

LAST WEEK
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Golden Hurricane finished the I-10 Border Classic 2-3 to move to 5-5 on the season. Tulsa opened the weekend with a 6-1 win over Nicholls before falling 0-6 to Missouri State. Claira Skaggs homered twice, including a game-winning grand slam to lift the Hurricane to a 6-2 win over the hosts, Lamar. Tulsa finished the weekend with losses to No. 6 Tennessee, 0-8, and McNeese, 2-6.
TULSA vs. THE FIELD
Oklahoma (10-0) – TU and OU meet for the 59th time in a series OU leads 48-10. The Hurricane is 4-27 in Norman against the Sooners and seeks the first win in the series since 2011. The teams met last season for a neutral site game at the USA Softball Complex with OU winning 8-0 in six innings. This will be the first of two meetings between the teams this year.
Abilene Christian (1-9) – Tulsa and Abilene Christian have split their four games evenly 2-2. The teams last met on March 16, 2016, for a doubleheader in Tulsa. The Hurricane won game one 4-1, but the Wildcats recovered for an 8-2 win in the second.
Bowling Green (2-3) – The Hurricane and Bowling Green have only one previous meeting. The Falcons won a March 19, 2004, contest 1-0 in Marietta, Ga.
South Dakota State (5-4) – Tulsa holds a 2-0 record against the Jackrabbits, but the teams have not met since 2010. The Hurricane has not given up a run to the Jackrabbits, beating SDSU 11-0 in 2009 and 3-0 in 2010. All meetings have been at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
THE SEASON SO FAR
Tulsa brings a 5-5 record into the weekend after going 3-2 in the opening weekend and 2-3 in the second weekend of games. Tulsa is batting .257 this season with eight doubles, a triple and seven home runs. In the circle, Tulsa pitchers have combined for a 3.92 ERA with 44 strikeouts and have allowed eight home runs.
CLAIRA IS GRAND
Senior third baseman Claira Skaggs played a huge role in Tulsa's 6-2 win over Lamar. She hit a solo home run to give TU a lead in the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh with the game tied at two, Skaggs stepped up with the bases loaded and smashed a grand slam to vie the Hurricane a 6-2 win.
WOOD DRIVES THEM HOME
Senior Celeste Wood is batting .321 this season and has the team lead with 11 RBIs. The outfielder, who is slugging .679, leads the team with five extra-base hits, hitting two doubles, a triple and two home runs.
DON'T RUN ON AMBER
Freshman Amber Turner is off to a great start in her Hurricane career. Not only is she leading the team with a .367 batting average with 11 hits, but she also is fifth in the NCAA and leads the American Athletic Conference with five runners caught trying to steal.
MAGNIFICANT MAURA
Senior pitcher Maura Moore has been busy, throwing 32.2 innings, the third-most in the conference and 31st most nationally. She leads The American with five starts and is second with three complete games. She ranks fourth in the league and 64th in the NCAA with 26 strikeouts.
WELCOME TO TULSA
Freshmen Aliya Scarborough and Annika Dill introduced themselves to Tulsa fans in the opening weekend in big ways. In her first at-bat in the season opener, Dill doubled down the line to drive in a row. And then in her first at-bat of her second game, she homered down the left field line, scoring two. Scarborough made a big bang in her first plate appearance of her career. Facing the No. 2 Texas Longhorns as a designated player, Scarborough halved the Texas lead in the bottom of the third with a solo home run.
NEXT UP
Tulsa softball hosts the Hurricane Classic next weekend at the Collins Family Softball Complex. TU will host Kansas City and play Drake three times, including a Saturday doubleheader. The Hurricane will travel to Stillwater for a Sunday afternoon game against Oklahoma State to end the weekend.
