NORMAN, Okla. – The Golden Hurricane softball fell 8-0 in five innings to the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners in the first game of the OU Tournament on Saturday afternoon in front of 4,261 fans at Love's Field.
Tulsa fell to 5-6 on the season, its first game under .500, while OU stays undefeated at 11-0 and wins its home opener. The Sooners scored three in the second, a run in the fourth and four in the fourth with six hits. Tulsa was held to two hits and committed a pair of errors.
Senior third baseman Claira Skaggs and freshman catcher Amber Turner had Tulsa's two hits, but both came with two outs in their respective innings.
Senior Maura Moore (4-3) got the start and pitched three innings. She was tagged with four runs, two earned, on five hits, and walked four. Alexa Hopkins went a third of an inning and allowed three runs on two hits, and Brinly Maples spun the rest of the final frame, walking one. Tulsa did not strike out an OU batter.
OU pitchers combined for six strikeouts. Kierston Deal (2-0) got the start and the win, hurling 4.0 innings and giving up both hits. Isabella Smith threw the final inning and struck out two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tulsa drew a leadoff walk to open the game and Faith Russell got on. It was the lone time on Saturday a Hurricane got on base with fewer than two outs. The walk was quickly erased as Tulsa hit into a double play, ending the opportunity.
The Sooners put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the second to take the lead. A walk started the trouble. Oklahoma's first hit was hit up the middle and put two on with two out. Another walk loaded the bases for Ella Parker. Parker hit a bouncing ball down the first base line that just stayed fair and got under Paige Knight's glove and down the field in right, clearing the bags and giving OU a 3-0 lead.
OU added a fourth run in the third. Ailana Agbayani led the inning with a double. She advanced to third on a flyout to right and then scored on a single from Kasidi Pickering.
A leadoff double in the fourth ended Moore's night. After a groundout for the first out of the inning, OU tacked on a fifth run on a wild pitch. After another double and a walk, Pickering picked up a few more RBIs with a three-run home run to center and the Sooners now led 8-0.
The Hurricane had one more chance to extend the game in the fifth, but went down in order and the Sooners took the win.
Tulsa continues the tournament in Norman with a pair of games on Sunday against Bowling Green and Abilene Christian. First pitch against the Falcons is set for 10:30 a.m., and the game against the Wildcats will follow in the afternoon at one. The Hurricane will play both games at Love's Field.
