Golden Hurricane Splits Sunday Games

2/23/2025 4:30:00 PM | Softball

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Tulsa softball team opened with a 7-0 win but fell 5-1 in the afternoon contest with Abilene Christian at Love's Field in Norman on Sunday.

Tulsa moves to 6-7 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 2-6 and Wildcats improve to 3-9.

Brinley Maples (2-3) went the distance in the opening win. She scattered five hits and six strikeouts across the seven innings of work. Maura Moore (4-4) took the loss in the finale. Moore tossed four innings, allowing two runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts. Alexa Hopkins spun the final two innings, giving up three runs, zero earned, on three hits. She walked one and struck out a pair.

Five different Hurricane collected RBIs in the opening game. Celeste Wood homered for the third time this season, driving in two runs to extend her team-leading RBIs to 13 this season. Claira Skaggs doubled home a run, her first double of the campaign. Tallulah Pascucci drove in her first to runs as a Hurricane with a two-RBI single. Danielle Burns singled home a run and Elle Rouse earned an RBI the hard way, getting hit by a pitch with the bags loaded.

Riley Grant picked up Tulsa's lone run in the second game, driving Maci Cole home with a single up the middle. Skaggs had a multi-hit game against the Falcons, and Annika Dill had a pair of hits against the Wildcats.

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game One
Tulsa got on board with two outs in the bottom of the second. Cole got on board with a walk to bring up Burns. The senior smashed a single to right center, and Cole raced around from first to put TU ahead 1-0.

The Hurricane blew the game open with a six-run third inning. After a strikeout, Faith Russell drew a walk to be TU's first of many baserunners. Wood followed with her third home run of the season, a two-run blast to left to put TU ahead 3-0.

Dill singled to chase the starter from the game, and then Skaggs brought Dill home with her first double of the season to right center. An Amber Turner infield single and another walk loaded the bases with two outs.

Facing a 3-2 count, Rouse was drilled by the payoff pitch, bringing in Skaggs for Tulsa's fifth run. Pascucci ended the scoring with a single up the middle to score Cole and Turner.

That would be all Tulsa needed as the Hurricane held on for a 7-0 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game Two
Abilene Christian took the lead in the bottom of the second frame with a leadoff home run to right field. The Wildcats doubled their lead in the second with a leadoff double and consecutive singles. That would prove to be the winning run.

The Wildcats added three more runs in the fifth, thanks to a few Tulsa defensive mishaps. A single and fielding error put the first two runners on. After back-to-back strikeouts, Tulsa looked poised to possibly escape with no damage. Instead, two runs scored on a second error, putting ACU up 4-0.

Later in the frame, a double steal of second and home gave ACU its fifth run.

Tulsa got one back in the top of the seventh, but it was too little too late. Cole reached on a fielding error by the center fielder and advanced to second on the play. A groundout moved her to third and she came to score on Grant's single up the middle.
