Turner Homers, Tulsa Falls Short to No. 1 Oklahoma

TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa softball freshman catcher Amber Turner smashed her first career home run, but it was not enough as the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners beat the Golden Hurricane 10-2 in six innings on Wednesday evening in the Collins Family Softball Complex.
Tulsa (12-12, 2-1 The American) dropped back to .500 with the loss, while the Sooners (23-0, 3-0 SEC) keep their undefeated season going.
Turner added a second RBI later in the game, doubling home Celeste Wood as part of a 2-for-2 evening. She caught a Sooner attempting to steal in the first inning, getting it done on both sides of the plate. Wood, Maci Cole and Whitney Holcomb had Tulsa's other three hits in the game.
Maura Moore (8-6) got the start and pitched three innings against the Sooners. She allowed four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Brinly Maples, Abby Hayes and Alexa Hopkins also featured and combined to throw the other three innings, giving up a combined six runs on four hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Sooners opened the game with a single, but Turner connected with Faith Russell to catch the runner attempting to steal. After another hit, Moore got her first strikeout and then a popout to stop the Sooners. This ended a stretch of six games where the Sooners scored in the first inning.
OU took the lead in the top of the second with a leadoff solo shot to right from G. Garcia. A double and single doubled the Sooners lead before Tulsa stranded the Sooners with the bases full to end the top of the frame.
Turner came to the plate with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the second. She immediately halved the OU lead with her first career home run. And the Bentonville, Arkansas native got all of it, with the ball ending up in the street past the outer fence.
The Sooners got the run back and more in the third. The leadoff batter got on for the third straight inning, this time after getting hit by a pitch. Consecutive singles scored a run, and then a sacrifice fly put OU ahead 4-1.
A walk and a home run in the top of the fourth extended OU's lead to 6-1. The Sooners added a seventh run later in the frame.
TU got a run back in the bottom of the fourth. Wood singled up the middle on a 3-2 pitch to get the leadoff runner on-base. After a pair of strikeouts, Wood stole second to get herself into scoring position. Turner rewarded her with a double down the left field line. Wood raced around to score and cut the deficit to 7-2.
A pair of walks to lead off the sixth got Tulsa back in trouble. After a groundout moved both runners into scoring position scored both with a triple. Then a groundout scored the runner from third to give the Sooners the 10-2 lead.
Tulsa came to bat needing a run in the seventh but went down in order as the Sooners took the win.

Tulsa heads on the road for a weekend series at East Carolina. The Golden Hurricane will play Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday and Saturday will air on ESPN+ while the Sunday contest will stream on ECU's website. First pitch for Friday is set for 4 p.m. CT.
