4/17/2025 9:57:00 PM | Softball

TULSA, Okla. – The Golden Hurricane softball team fell 10-0 in five innings and 11-7 in a Thursday doubleheader against the visiting Wichita State Shockers in the Collins Family Softball Complex.

Weather affected the weekend schedule, forcing a doubleheader for the teams. Tulsa drops to 18-26 and 6-14 in The American, and its losing streak reaches 10 games. Wichita State improves to 23-20-1 and 11-8-1 in The American on the season and will search for its first conference series sweep on Friday.

Maura Moore (12-13) got the start and loss in the opener. She went 3.1 innings and allowed six runs on five hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts. Alexa Hopkins threw an inning and a third, getting tagged for four runs and three hits. Abby Hayes faced one batter in the contest.

Brinly Maples (4-6) started the finale and kept Wichita State at bay until the sixth inning, when Wichita State scored seven. She spun 5.1 innings and allowed eight runs, only two earned, on five hits. She waked six and struck out three. Hayes pitched 1.2 innings in relief and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits with three strikeouts.

Ryley Nihart (7-4) went the distance for the Shockers in game one, grabbing the win. She allowed just four hits and walked one while striking out four. Chloe Barber (5-6) got the win in game two. She came on in relief and threw an inning, allowing two runs, one earned, and a hit.

Maci Cole extended her hitting streak to 16 games with a hit in each contest. She also walked for the 31st time this season. Amber Turner added to her strong freshman campaign with a triple and a home run on Thursday. She drove in three runs in the second game of the doubleheader. Celeste Wood, Annika Dill and Elle Rouse all recorded RBI. Dill doubled in each game Thursday, Cole and Knight recorded two-baggers in the first game, as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game One
The Shockers got on the board in the first inning with a pair of runs. Back-to-back hit batters loaded the bases and then brought in the first run, and then a single to right made it 2-0.

Tulsa got runners to third in the opening two innings but couldn't capitalize. Cole started the bottom of the first with a double but was not brought home. In the second, Knight doubled and was left at third.

Wichita State added four runs in the fourth to go ahead 6-0. A two-run single from Krystin Nelson and then a two-run home run from Ellee Eck did the damage for the shockers. The fifth inning played out similarly with the visitors scoring a run on a Nelson single and then another homer from Eck, this one for three runs to make the score 10-0. That would stand as the final as Tulsa was unable to cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame.

Tulsa managed four hits in the ballgame while allowing eight. The Hurricane also committed a pair of errors and each team left four on base.

Another sacrifice bunt moved them both into scoring position. Wood singled home Russell and then Dill doubled to drive home Cole. Turner tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly as Tulsa took a 5-1 lead after three.

Wichita State flipped the script in the sixth with seven runs. A single, walk and error loaded the bases with nobody out. The first run of the inning scored on a groundout. Back-to-back errors scored scored four more runs. Lauren Lucas put an exclamation point on the inning with a two-run homer to left, giving Wichita State an 8-5 lead.

Walks to Whitney Holcomb, Burns and Cole loaded the bases. Riley Grant pinch hit and hit into a fielder's choice with the first out at home. The catcher then tried to fire to first, but the throw was off the target and went into right field.
