Softball Defeats Wichita State, 5-2

TULSA, Okla. – After taking the lead in the bottom of the first inning, the University of Tulsa defeated Wichita State University, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
Tulsa (19-26, 7-14 The American) trailed after the top of the first inning against Wichita State (23-21-1, 11-9-1 The American). After the top of the first, the Golden Hurricane outscored the Shockers 5-0 in the contest. TU outhit the Shockers 8-4 in the contest.
Maura Moore (13-13) got the start and recorded the win for the Hurricane on Friday. She pitched a complete game and limited Wichita State to only four hits, with only one hit coming after the first inning. She also tallied three strikeouts in the game.
Wichita State's Ryley Nihart (7-5) got the loss for the Shockers. She worked six innings and allowed five runs (all earned) and eight hits to the Tulsa hitters. She walked five and only struck out two.
Celeste Wood and Paige Knight led Tulsa at the plate, each having two hits. Wood, Maci Cole, and Annika Dill all picked up a home run in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Shockers came out swinging in the first inning as they tallied two runs on three hits. With two outs, Taylor Sedlacek picked up the first hit of the inning with a double to left field. The very next hitter, Camryn Compton, hit a two-run homer, putting WSU ahead 2-0.
Tulsa answered right back in the bottom of the first inning. Cole led off the inning for the Golden Hurricane and hit a leadoff home run cutting the lead in half. After a fly-out, Wood followed with a single up the middle. With a runner on first, Dill hit a two-run bomb to left center, giving TU a 3-2 lead.
Moore settled in following the first inning and, in the second, retired the first hitter before allowing a double to Brookelyn Livanec. Following the double in the top of the second, Moore did not allow another hit for the contest.
The Golden Hurricane added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wood hit a home run to center field with one out, extending TU's lead to 4-2. This was the third home run of the day for the Hurricane.
Following the lead, Moore was settled in and retired Shockers in ten pitches in the top of the sixth inning to bring Tulsa back to the plate. Tulsa tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, Turner grounded out to the pitcher that plated the fifth run of the game for TU.
Moore tallied her third strikeout of the game in the top of the seventh when she got Sami Hood to strike out. She got the next two batters out to pick up the win for Tulsa.
UP NEXT
Tulsa returns to action on Tuesday, April 22nd when they head to Springfield, Mo. to face Missouri State in non-conference action. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
