Tulsa Drops Series at UTSA

4/27/2025 2:13:00 PM | Softball

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Tulsa softball team was shutout 5-0 in the rubber match of the series to UTSA Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner field.

The Golden Hurricane (20-29, 8-16 The American) did not pick up its first hit until the sixth inning. UTSA (21-30, 6-18 The American), hit three home runs in the contest, including back-to-back in the first inning. Tulsa was outhit 9-3 in the loss and each team left four stranded.

Alexa Hopkins (2-7) got the start and loss, going an inning and allowing two runs on two hits with a strikeout. Maura Moore allowed the other three runs on five hits in her 2.2 innings of work. She struck out four batters. Brinly Maples pitched the final two and a third innings and didn't allow a run. She gave up two hits and walked and struck out a batter.

Ava Eldridge (7-8) went the distance for UTSA, giving up just three hits, walking two and striking out a batter.

Maci Cole, Annika Dill and Elle Rouse had Tulsa's hits, while Faith Russell and Dill each drew walks. Rouse smacked a two-out double in the seventh for the lone extra-base hit.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UTSA took the lead in the bottom of the first inning and never relinquished. With two away, C. Moreno hit a solo home run to right center to break the deadlock. K. Reyes followed suit, forcing a full count and then taking the payoff pitch to center as the Roadrunners went back-to-back and jumped ahead 2-0.

Moore entered to pitch in the second inning. She alternated singles and outs as UTSA got runners to first and second with two outs. A third single in the inning scored a run, and then a wild pitch brought in the second run of the inning and fourth of the game.

A Lindsey Davis solo home run with one out in the fourth put UTSA up 5-0 and would prove to be the final run of the contest.

Cole ended the no-hit bid in the sixth with a soft ground ball up the middle. The second baseman tracked it down in the hole but had no chance of catching Cole at first.

Dill singled to lead off the seventh as Tulsa mounted a final comeback attempt. With two away, Rouse lifted a double, her second of the weekend, down the left field line. Aliya Scarborough then smashed a high fly ball to dead center, but was robbed of an extra-base hit and runs as the center fielder made a leaping grab against the wall, ending the game.
