TULSA, Okla. – The Golden Hurricane softball team fell 9-3 and 8-6 to Charlotte in a Sunday doubleheader at the Collins Family Softball Complex as the visitors completed the American Athletic Conference series sweep over the University of Tulsa.
Weather postponed Saturday's game two, turning Sunday into an opportunity to play two. With the losses, TU is now 18-21 on the season and 6-9 in conference play. Charlotte is 20-21 and 8-7 in The American, sweeping Tulsa for the second season in a row.
Maura Moore (12-10) got the start and loss in game one. She allowed four runs on four hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts. Brinly Maples and Abby Hayes combined to throw the final five innings. Maples allowed five runs on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout. Hayes allowed just one hit and a walk in her 2.2 innings of work.
Alexa Hopkins (2-5) had the ball in game two, tossing 4.0 innings in the loss. She allowed seven runs, four earned, on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Hayes came in and pitched in game two as well, spinning 3.0 innings and allowing a run on two hits with a walk and strikeout.
Charlotte pitchers Brooke Bowling (11-8) and Aubrey Yarnall (7-7) both went the distance in their respective games. Bowling took the opener and allowed three runs on five TU hits. She walked three and struck out four. Yarnall allowed six hits on eight runs in the second game, five of those runs coming in the final inning. She walked a pair and struck out a pair.
Maci Cole had three hits, all for extra bases, and drove in five runs between the two games. The senior shortstop homered twice in game one and tripled in three runs in the second. Elle Rouse picked up an RBI and a hit in game one and drove in another run in game two. Celeste Wood had a three-hit game in the finale.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game One
Charlotte put runs on the board in the second through fifth innings. The 49ers took the lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single through the left side with the bases loaded.
The Hurricane tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Paige Knight doubled to get the offense going. With two outs, Rouse ripped a single to left field, bringing in Knight to tie the game.
The Niners took the lead for good in the top of the third with back-to-back home runs. First, Jenna Lord went opposite field on a two-run homer to right. Then, Teagan Ritchie put one over the fence in left to give Charlotte a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, a walk and a wild pitch put Charlotte in a position to take a 5-1 advantage on an RBI single. Ritchie picked up her second home run of the day with a two-run homer to left as the lead blossomed to 7-1.
A walk and single put runners on the corner for the visitors in the fifth. A double steal brought in the team's eighth run. Then, Charlotte ended its scoring with a single to left to jump ahead 9-1.
Maci Cole started off the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot to right field, her seventh home run of the season. Number eight came in the bottom of the seventh when she stepped in with one out and put another ball over the fence In left. That would be it for TU as Charlotte took the opener 9-3. TU was outhit 12-5 in the loss and committed the game's only error.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game Two
Tulsa struck first in the second game of the day and finale of the series. Wood beat out an infield single and then moved to third on a Knight single, whereas Knight was thrown out trying to extend for a double. Amber Turner ripped a single past the shortstop to score Wood and give TU a 1-0 advantage.
The lead would last until the third inning, when a pair of errors proved costly. With one on and one out, the Niners reached safely on a fielding error at second base. An infield single loaded the bags. Cole fielded a sharply hit ground ball and connected with Turner at the plate for the force out for the inning's second out. But then, a throwing error at third kept the inning alive and tied the game at one. The 49ers took further advantage with a bloop single down the left field line, scoring two to take a 3-1 lead.
Charlotte blew the game open in the fourth. After a walk, Charlotte got a single, a walk and then three straight RBI singles to score three runs and go up 6-1. The Niners pulled off another double steal to score a seventh run in the game.
The score would stay 7-1 until the seventh inning. A pair of Charlotte doubles sandwiched a lineout as CLT took an 8-1 lead into the final frame.
Turner was hit by a pitch to lead things off. With one out, Annika Dill singled to center, and then Tallulah Pascucci singled to the pitcher as TU loaded the bags. Rouse hit a sacrifice fly to the center fielder, who made a nice diving snag to deny more than just the one run as the deficit was cut to 8-2. After a walk was issued to Brookley Foster, again loading the bags, Cole came to the plate. The senior hit a towering fly ball to right that gave the fielder trouble and landed for a bases-clearing triple as TU was threatening, now, 8-5.
Wood kept the rally going with a single to right to score Cole and cut the deficit to 8-6. However, a flyout to the right fielder ended the threat and the game. Tulsa and Charlotte tied 8-8 on hits in the finale. TU had the game's two errors and Charlotte left six on base compared to three from the Golden Hurricane.
