TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa (1-0-0) secured a 1-0 victory over the University of Illinois Chicago (0-1-0) on Thursday at Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium. The home team's defense played a crucial role, with its goalkeeper, Carlito Saylon, making eight saves to preserve the shutout. This performance marked Saylon's eighth career clean sheet, just one save short of his career game record.
The first half commenced with both teams displaying strong defensive efforts. Tulsa's Arnau Pedrola Fortuny took an early shot within the opening 10 minutes, but it was saved by UIC's goalkeeper, Owen Cornell. The Flames responded with multiple attempts, including a close-range effort by Sota Nakazono at the 14th minute, which was stopped by Tulsa's goalkeeper, Carlito Saylon. Both teams struggled to break the deadlock, despite UIC's Darrell Turcios and Artem Grinblat putting pressure on Tulsa's defense with several shots. The half concluded with neither team finding the back of the net, leaving the score tied at 0-0.
UIC's Sota Nakazono initiated pressure early in the second half with a shot in the 48th minute, but it was saved by Saylon. The Golden Hurricane's offense responded with a shot from Luc Achermann-Stanfield at the 52nd minute, which was also saved. In the 54th minute, a header from Achermann-Stanfield deflected off a Flames player into the net for the lone score of the match. This marked the first own goal in a Tulsa game since 2023, when it went in favor of Tulsa's opponent. Meanwhile, Christian Mezas and Lucas Cook both fired their first shots as Golden Hurricane, adding to the team's offensive efforts. Saylon played a crucial role for Tulsa, making significant saves, including a key stop in the 73rd minute from Daniel Zepeda's attempt. Despite UIC's late offensive efforts, Tulsa maintained the lead until the final whistle.
Carlito Saylon emphasized the team effort after Tulsa's victory against UIC at Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium. "I can't make every save, but I can do my best to try. Tonight I felt like I showed that, but ultimately it was about the team," Saylon said. He credited the team's defensive strategy, stating, "I didn't shut this team out. My team shut this team out. We came in with a great plan and we controlled the controllables." The win marked a solid start to the season for Tulsa.
In their next game, the Golden Hurricane will host UC-Riverside on Sunday, Aug. 23, at Hurricane Soccer Stadium in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The match will kick off at 1 p.m. CT.
