HONOLULU - Donald Shoals scored on a 41-yard punt return off a fake reverse and added an insurance touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Josh Blankenship to give Tulsa a 24-14 victory Saturday night over Hawaii.
The Golden Hurricane (3-2, 2-0 Western Athletic Conference) appeared to have the game well in hand, jumping off to a 17-0 lead at the half on Shoals' first TD, a 20-yard field goal by Chris Earnest and a 1-yard dive by Ken Bohanon.
But Hawaii (0-3, 0-2) rallied behind Timmy Chang, who was making his first start at quarterback. The true freshman led the Warriors to a pair of TDs in the third and fourth quarters to make it a 3-point game.
With Tulsa ahead, 17-14, in the fourth quarter, the Warriors thought they had moved into the lead on a 67-yard hook-up between Chang and Ashley Lelie, but they were whistled for a personal foul penalty that nullified the play.
Tulsa capitalized on the mistake and padded its lead on a 10-yard Blankenship-Shoals hookup.
Shoals' first score came when he took Mat McBriar's punt, faked a handoff to CJ Scott and raced untouched along the sidelines.
After Earnest's 20-yard field goal, Bohanon, who rushed for 92 yards on 29 carries, ran in from 1 yard to make it 17-0.
The Golden Hurricane then appeared to go to sleep in the third quarter. They went 3-and-out on three of their first four second-half possessions, giving Hawaii an opportunity to catch up.
Chang passed 29 yards to Justin Colbert and Avion Weaver scored from 15 yards on a draw play to make it 17-14.
Then came the penalty-recalled score, which set the stage for Shoals' second score.
Until Colbert's score, the Warriors had not scored an offensive touchdown in eight quarters.
Chang finished the game with 31 completions on 48 attempts for 313. The Warriors also weren't helped by 15 penalties totaling 132 yards.
For Tulsa, the win bettered their win total of last season when the Golden Hurricane went 2-9. Tulsa is looking for its first winning season since 1991.
