Broken Arrow, Okla. - Tulsa took a four-stroke lead over the 12th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs with a six-over par 294 in the second round at the 2001 Western Athletic Conference Championships at the par-72 Forest Ridge Golf Club on Tuesday.
The Hurricane have a 36-hole total of 587. TCU scored a second round 300 and heads into Wednesday's final round with a 591 total. UTEP is in third-place, 11 strokes behind Tulsa at 598. Rounding out the team scores are SMU at 601, Fresno State at 607, Hawaii at 608, Nevada at 611, Rice at 612 and San Jose State at 617.
Tulsa freshman David Inglis and TCU's Scott Volpitto, the leader after the first round, share the individual lead with one-under par 143s. Inglis carded the day's best round with a four-under par 68, after turning in three-over par 75 on Monday. Volpitto carded a second round 74 after his first round 69.
Inglis, who has garnered the last two player of the week honors in the WAC, scored a three-under par 33 on the front nine, and a one-under par on the back nine. He carded birdies on holes 1, 3, 9, and finished with three consecutive birdies on holes 16, 17, and 18. Inglis shot three-under today on the final three holes, an improvement from his two-over on those same holes Monday.
"It started off good. I had a birdie on the first that set the tone for the day," said Inglis. "To start off well was important. It got me fired up. I had birdies at three and nine, but I lost my way on the back nine with two bogey's to start off. I got it together and finished with three birdies. I played the first 12 today as I did yesterday, two-under. Yesterday, I just couldn't finish and I let things slip."
TU junior Kevin Henry is in a four-way tie for third-place following his 74 today for a three-over par 147. He is tied with SMU's Franklin Hatchett, who scored one of two rounds of 72 today, Fresno State's Nick Watney and Nathan Fritz of UTEP.
Henry scored a one-under par 35 on the back nine after a three-over par 39 on the front side. Watney scored a five-over par 77 today, while Hatchett carded an even-par 72 after birdies on holes 3, 8 and 17. UTEP's Fritz shot a two-under par 34 on the front side, and a two-over par on the back nine.
Hurricane freshman Chris Noel and senior Shawn Matthews each carded 76 today, while Matthews is in 10th place with a 149 total and Noel has a 152 score after two rounds for 18th place. Sophomore Billy Lowry, who had Tulsa's best round on Monday with an even-par 72, scored an 81 today and is in 21st place with a 153 total.
"I'm pleased with the fact that almost every guy was able to hit it and finish good. They were able to make birdies and finish their shots," said Tulsa Head Coach Bill Brogden.
The final 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament will be played on Wednesday with tee-off times beginning at 8:00 a.m.
