Ardmore, Oklahoma - The Tulsa men's golf team totaled a one-under par 279 on Sunday and erased a five-stroke deficit to wins its first tournament title of the season by capturing the championship at The Maxwell in Ardmore, Oklahoma.
It was a total team effort for the Hurricane, counting two 69s, a 70 and a one-over par 71 today for its 279 total at the par-70 Dornick Hills Country Club. Tulsa had earlier rounds of 285 and 284 on Saturday.
The 39th-ranked Hurricane edged out six of the nation's top-25 teams to grab the team title. Tulsa outdistanced second-place Oklahoma State, ranked 13th, by two strokes, while #5 Texas had an 853 total and came in third place followed by a tie for fourth place between #22 Auburn and #13 Oklahoma at 854. Sixth-ranked Southern California placed sixth, while 19th ranked Houston finished in eighth place.
Tulsa freshman David Inglis carded a final round 71 for an even-par 210 total which was good for a fourth place tie. Inglis, who garnered his 13th top-20 finish in as many tournaments this year, had earlier rounds of 71 and 68.
The two 69s today for the Hurricane were scored by junior Kevin Henry and sophomore Billy Lowry. The duo finished with one-over par scores of 211 for seventh place. It was Lowry's best performance this season, while the top-10 finish for Henry was his second of the year. Henry shot rounds of 72-70-69, while Lowry, a transfer from Oklahoma State, carded rounds of 70-72-69.
Although finishing in a tie for 58th place, Tulsa freshman Chris Noel carded a 70 today for the Hurricane. In his first tournament since a bout with pneumonia, freshman Logan Goettsch carded a 13-over par 223 to place 68th. Yet another freshman, Neil Trimm placed 38th as an individual (his score not counting for the team). Trimm carded rounds of 72-74-72 for his 218 total.
