Tulsa, Okla. - Three members of the Golden Hurricane women's track and field squad will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships beginning on Wednesday and continuing through Saturday, May 29-June 2, in Eugene, Ore. on the of the University of Oregon campus. This marks the most competitors TU has had at the championships since fielding a track and field program.
Freshman sensation Shana Robinson, a Tulsa native, has qualified for the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.42. She currently holds the 14th fastest time in the country and is the second fastest freshman in the field of 22 runners. She is also one of only two runners from the Western Athletic Conference to qualify for the event. Robinson is also the first freshman in TU history to compete in the NCAA Championships.
Robinson was the WAC Freshman of the Year for the indoor season, as she set three school records for the 55-meter dash, the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. She continued that success during the outdoor campaign setting two more school records (100m and 200m) and finishing second at the WAC Outdoor championships in Fresno, Calif., in the 100m.
Junior Charlotte Sanderson will compete in the 10,000-meter run for the Hurricane. The transfer from York, England, clocked a school record time of 34:25.78. Not only was that the 17th best time in the nation, it beat the previous school record by nearly four minutes. Julie Peevy ran a 38:30.0 in 1985 to set the old school record.
Sanderson finished second in the event at the WAC Outdoor Championships as well as placing third in the 5,000m. She also finished second in 5,000-meter run at the WAC Indoor Championships that were held in Reno, Nev., earlier this year.
Senior Fride Vullum will compete in her second outdoor championship. As TU's most decorated runner, Vullum has competed in four national championships, two as a cross country runner and one each for indoor track and outdoor track. She holds seven individual school records and is a member of a record setting relay team.
Vullum won the 1,500m and the 5,000m events at the WAC Outdoor Championships, giving her a total of six during her career at TU. Last season, she became the first TU runner ever to win three conference titles as she won the cross country crown, the indoor 5,000m and the outdoor 3,000m.
