Hurricane Scrimmage on First Day in Full Pads

Sophomore running back Eric Richardson rushed for 70 yards on 10 carries and caught two passes for 25 yards in Tulsa's first scrimmage action.

Tulsa, Oklahoma - The Tulsa Golden Hurricane went through a 79-play scrimmage on Saturday night, that pleased Head Coach Keith Burns.

"I was impressed with how we played the first time in full pads. We had good intensity and we executed well," said Burns.

The offensive unit scored three touchdowns, all on drives covering 65 yards. On the first drive, junior quarterback Josh Blankenship led the offense on a 65-yard, 9-play drive by connecting on 4-of-5 passes for 51 yards including a 19-yard TD toss to senior receiver Donald Shoals in the end zone.

The defense stopped the next offensive drive, as junior Don Gibson intercepted a James Kilian pass. Quarterbacks Tyler Gooch, a freshman, and Zac Lassiter, a redshirt freshman, each contributed to the offense's next touchdown as true freshman Kevin McKenzie capped another 9-play, 65-yard drive with a two-yard TD run.

Blankenship quarterbacked the offense to its third TD of the 70-minute scrimmage, but all the the yards came on the ground as sophomore running back Eric Richardson rushed four times for 52 of Tulsa's 65 yards, including the final 14-yard touchdown run.

Senior placekicker Chris Earnest added a 37-yard field goal.

For the game, Blankenship completed 7-of-12 passes for 72 yards and one TD, while Kilian completed 6-of-10 passes for 53 yards, and Tyler Gooch completed 5-of-10 passes for 61 yards. Tulsa quarterbacks used 13 different receivers, as freshman Jermaine Landrum caught two passes fo 35 yards, Richardson had two receptions for 25 yards out of the backfield, and Shoals had two catches for 24 yards and one TD.

On the ground, Richardson paved the way with 10 rushes for 70 yards and one TD, followed by the freshman McKenzie's 12 rushes for 54 yards and one TD. Sophomore DJ Barnett had 10 carries for 40 yards.

The Hurricane will practice once on Sunday afternoon.
