Tulsa Battles UMKC In Week's Lone Tilt:
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane (2-2) will play its third straight game on the road as TU travels to Kansas City, Mo., this weekend to face the UMKC Kangaroos (2-1). The Hurricane and Kangaroos will square off on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 2:00 p.m. Since the teams first met in 1988, Tulsa leads the all-time series, 6-1. The last time these two schools met on the soccer field was 1998 in Tulsa. The Hurricane captured a 4-2 victory in that game.

The Golden Hurricane returns home on Tuesday, September 18 for the annual Mazzio's T-Town Shootout with cross-town rival Oral Roberts at 7:35 p.m. The game will be played at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.

Golden Hurricane Captures SMS Tournament Title:
Tulsa captured back-to-back wins last weekend at the Southwest Missouri State Tournament to claim the tournament team title.

The Hurricane needed overtime to chalk up its first win of the 2001 campaign against Western Illinois. TU senior Chris Spears (Tulsa, Okla.) knocked in the game-winning goal at the 102:19 mark in overtime to give Tulsa a 3-2 win over the Leathernecks. TU junior Mario Gonzalez (Santa Ana, Calif.) and sophomore Stephen Warwick (Morpeth, England) each tallied a goal in the winning effort.

Tulsa won its second straight game of the season and secured the tournament championship with a 3-0 shutout victory over Georgia Southern. The Golden Hurricane received goals from freshman Kyle Brown (Southlake, Texas), senior Brent Bayouth (Sapulpa, Okla.) and sophomore Matt Yeager (Rockwall, Texas).

Gonzalez is TU's "Super" Mario":
In his second season at Tulsa, Mario Gonzalez has turned into "Super" Mario. Gonzalez leads the Hurricane in scoring this season with two goals and two assists for six points. He produced one goal and one assist for three points in TU's 3-2 win over Western Illinois. His assist resulted in Chris Spear's game-winning overtime goal against Western Illinois.

Brown, Dabney Living Up To National Hype:
TU's freshmen duo of Kyle Brown and James Dabney (Los Alamos, N.M.) were each picked as 2001 Freshmen to Watch by College Soccer News. Four games into the season, the duo is living up to the national billing. Both players are the only two freshmen to start all four games and reach the scoring column. Brown is second on the team in scoring with one goal and one assist for three points, while Dabney has one assist for one point. Brown recorded his first collegiate point with an assist against Western Illinois and his first goal vs. Georgia Southern. Dabney picked up the first point of his career with an assist against Georgia Southern.

Salter Standing Tall in Goal:
TU junior goalkeeper Brent Salter(Conway, Ark.) recorded the second shutout of his career against Georgia Southern. This season Salter has started all four games, allowed just five goals and collected 13 assists for a 1.21 goals-against-average. Salter was named to the 2001 Microtel Inn & Suites/Golden Hurricane Kickoff Classic earlier this season.

McIntosh Nearing TU's Career Coaching Mark:
Tulsa Head Coach Tom McIntosh, who is in his seventh season at TU, is just four wins shy of becoming the school's winningest head coach. He needs just three wins to tie Randy Waldrum's (1989-94) school record of 66 wins. McIntosh, whose tenure is the longest in the 20-year history of the TU men's soccer program, boasts a career head coaching mark of 63-49-6.

Player Notes:
Several Hurricane players saw their first action of the season last weekend. Making their first appearances in a Hurricane uniform were freshmen Rhodri Payne (Christchurch, New Zealand), J.J. Havlik (Tulsa, Okla.) and sophomore Kenny Infante (Carrollton, Texas).

Team Notes:
Tulsa has attempted more than twice as many shots as its opponents this season by a margin of 60-28.

TU's shutout against Georgia Southern was its first shutout since a 2-0 win over San Jose State during the 1999 campaign.

Tulsa is 1-1 this season in meetings with first-time opponents. TU will play a total of four teams for the first time this season.
