Tulsa's Wimberly Named WAC Defensive Player of the Week

Junior Darrell Wimberly, in his first season as a cornerback for the Golden Hurricane, was selected as the WAC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against UTEP.

Denver, Colorado - University of Tulsa cornerback Darrell Wimberly was named the Western Athletic Conference's defensive player of the week for his performance on Saturday, it was announced today by the league office.

Wimberly, a junior from Tulsa's Union High School, had five tackles (four solo), broke up three passes and returned two interceptions for 28 yards in a 20-0 victory over UT-El Paso. The first interception occurred at the Tulsa two-yard line, preventing the Miners from scoring near the end of the half.

On the season, Wimberly has been credited 32 tackles, including 25 solos, three interceptions for 28 return yards, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

The award was the second of the year for the Hurricane defense, as tackle Sam Rayburn received the defensive player of the week honor for the week of September 28.
