Denver, Colorado - University of Tulsa defensive tackle Sam Rayburn (Chickasha, Okla.) earned first-team Western Athletic Conference honors, as announced by the league office today. Rayburn was the only Hurricane player selected to the all-conference squad, and is the first TU player to earn first-team merits since the 2000 season.
Rayburn, a 6'3" senior, tallied 61 tackles on the season and completed his career with 137 stops. He set the school record for tackles for lost yardage in a season with 17.5 stops for -59 yards, a record he tied as a junior with 16 tackles for lost yardage. He led the WAC this year in that statistical category.
With 39.5 career tackles for lost yardage, Rayburn fell 0.5 tackles shy of tying Don Blackmon's (1976-80) career record of 40.
In addition, senior center Anthony Taylor, junior running back Eric Richardson, senior linebacker Michael Dulaney, sophomore safety Jeff Thibodeaux and sophomore return specialist Jermaine Landrum earned honorable mention accolades.
