TU Tracksters Prepare for WAC Championships at Sooner Invitational

Norman, Okla. - With the Western Athletic Conference Championships scheduled for next week in Reno, Nev., both the men's and the women's track squads did not want to risk serious injury as they competed at the Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla.
On the women's side three TU runners took part in the 600-yard dash, led by junior Monica Joannes' fourth place finish in a personal-best time of 1:23.78. Fellow junior April Johnson finished ninth with a time of 1:26.68. Freshman Melanie Hardy clocked a time of 1:28.34 to finish 11th.
Sophomore Suzanne Smith finished 20th in the prelimenaries of the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.36.
On the men's side five TU runners participated in the 60-meter dash. Sophomore Micheal Ledowsky and senior Donald Shoals finished tied for 26th with a time of 7.16. Two other TU football players also ran in the event as sophomores Eric Richardson finished 29th with a time of 7.23 and Sherman Steptoe finished 35th with a time of 7.36. Junior Sean Szafarz finished 38th with a time of 7.59.
Shoals and Szafarz ran in the 200-meter dash. Shoals finished 10th with a personal best time of 22.81, while Szafarz finished 15th with a time of 24.02.
Sophomore Jason Kruger finished sixth in the high jump with a leap of 1.97m (6'5.5"). Fellow sophomore and TU wide out Montiese Culton finished 10th in the long jump with a jump of 6.57m (21'6.75").
Running unattached, senior Brian Erwin, who is redshirting this season, won the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:29.43.
