Lakeland, Florida - The Tulsa men's golf team captured its first tournament title of the season by winning the Matlock Invitational Championship at the par-72 Grasslands Golf and Country Club in Lakeland, Florida, on Tuesday.
Tulsa began the day with a two-stroke lead over Colorado, and at the end of the day still held a two-stroke lead, but this time over second-place Virginia Tech. The Hurricane scored a final round seven-over par 295 to go along with yesterday's rounds of 291 and 287 for a nine-over par 873 total over 54 holes.
Virginia Tech had the day's best round with a two-under par 286 total and finished in second place, followed by third-place Colorado's 878, Alabama's 880 and Missouri's 883 total for fifth place.
Individually, Tulsa sophomore David Inglis carded a final round one-under par 71 and finished in second place overall, just one stroke off individual medallist Steve Sokol of Florida Southern. It was Inglis' best finish of the season, and his 12th top-10 performance in 19 career tournaments.
Fellow sophomore Neil Trimm and senior Kevin Henry finished in a 16th place tie with 54-hole totals of five-over par 221. Henry turned in a final round 74, while Trimm carded 75 today. Sophomore Chris Noel also shot a 75 in the final round and finished one stroke back at six-over par 222 to place 20th overall. Junior Marc Zien finished in 52nd place with a 235 total.
The Hurricane will be back in action, March 1-3, at the LSU Spring Invitational in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
