Tracksters Finish Day Two of WAC Indoor Championships

Junior Sarah Haskins and senior Charlotte Sanderson highlighted the Golden Hurricane's performance at the 2002 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at the Reno Livestock Center in Reno, Nev.

Haskins finished second in the women's 5,000-meter run only 15 seconds behind Nevada's Erin Seward, in a time of 18:09.35. Sanderson finished third in a time of 18:21.17.

For the men, sophomore Owain Matthews finished fifth in the 5,000m with a time of 15:44.79. Freshman Heston King finished fifth in the high jump, while sophomore Jason Krueger finished sixth as both recorded jumps of 1.98, (6'6").

The men's distance medley team finished fourth with a time of 10:23.08, while the women's distance medley team with a time of 12:25.56.

In premliminary action, sophomore Shana Robinson recorded the top time in the 55-meter dash with a school record time of 6.97. She also recorded the second best time in the 200m with another school record time of 24.10. Her time in the 200m also provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Junior Monica Joannes clocked the third best time for the 800m in the preliminaries with a time of 2:13.64. Fellow junior Derek Sparks turned in the fifth best preliminary time for the men's 800m with a time of 1:55.38. Another junior, Adrian Young, also turned in the fifth best time for the men's 200m with a time of 22.06

Glenpool native, Branon Vaughn clocked the second best time in the preliminaries of the men's 400m with a time of 49.28, while fellow junior Jamese James ranks sixth in the women's 400m with a time of 55.66.

In the 55m hurdles, James' preliminary time of 8.24 ranked fourth. Freshman Jamal Bogle's time of 8.05 on the men's side also ranked fourth after the preliminary heats.

The championships conclude on Saturday.
