Hawaii Survives Hurricane Scare

Tulsa, Okla. - The Rainbow Wahine of Hawai`i survived the biggest scare they had seen from Tulsa since the Golden Hurricane won the first game of the first match between the two schools in 1997. Needing all 21 kills from WAC Player of the Year and first-team All-American Kim Willoughby, Hawai`i swept TU 3-0 (30-20, 30-22, 30-26) in the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Saturday night.
Tulsa held early leads in all three games, including scoring first in all three stanzas. However the power and experience of UH showed, as the Wahine were able to pull away from the upstart Hurricane.
Junior Lindsay Eaves led the Hurricane attack with 10 kills, as she and Willoughby were the only player to record double-figure kill performances. Fellow junior Vanessa Thon recorded 31 assists, while senior Nathalia Araujo contributed 12 digs.
Hawai`i ranked No. 2 in the country by both the American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA) and Volleyball magazine improves to 23-1 (9-0 WAC) on the season. UH has now won 106 of 107 Western Athletic Conference matches.
Tulsa (11-11, 2-7 WAC) will continue its current home stand on Thurday, Oct. 30. The Golden Hurricane will host Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. TU's final home match of the season will be on Saturday, Nov. 1, in a 7 p.m. match with SMU.
