Thursday, January 1

Tulsa practiced nearly two hours on the blue turf of Bronco Stadium this afternoon . . . following practice, Head Coach Steve Kragthorpe autographed 150 souvenir footballs that will be distributed to bowl sponsors . . . former offensive lineman Jerry Ostroski, a starting guard on Tulsa's last Bowl team, was a visitor at practice today . . . a member of Tulsa's last team that played Georgia Tech in the 1945 Orange Bowl, J.R. Boone, has made it to Boise and will be at Saturday's game . . . Tulsa had a tour of the World of Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame, where players were able to pose with a Heisman Trophy and learn about those athletes who have dedicated their lives to helping others and going beyond the game . . . both teams attended the Beyond the Game Banquet at the Boise Centre on the Grove where former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rocky Bleier was the featured speaker . . . quarterback James Kilian was the TU recipient of the Humanitarian Award, while Georgia Tech's Nate Curry was awarded the same honor for his team . . . after the banquet Rocky Bleier posed for a picture with Tulsa's running back corps.

Wednesday, December 31

The team wake-up call was for 6:45 this morning, as the Hurricane awoke to coating of light snow . . . Tulsa began practice at 8:50, and concluded at 10:30 am . . . a light, but steady snowfall kept up throughout the entire workout . . . it didn't take long for a few players to find the heaters on the sidelines as they made it to the field for practice . . . with five minutees remaining in Wednesday's practice, an injured Uril Parrish, standing next to the heater, smelled something burning, only to look down to see his sweat pants scorched . . . his sweat pants was the only casualty in Wednesday's practice session . . . appearing at Tulsa's press conference on Wednesday was Jorma Bailey, James Kilian and Austin Chadwick, as well as Coach Kragthorpe . . . one might notice the new hairstyle for senior offensive lineman Austin Chadwick . . . he boarded the plane on Tuesday with a shaved head . . . other offensive lineman have followed suit, as Jeff Perrett had his head shaven last night . . . when Tulsa was 3-4 on the season, he committed to his fellow offensive lineman to shave his head should the Hurricane make a bowl game . . . the offensive line held Chadwick to his word . . . a frequent face around the hotel and practice the last two days has been Ernie Riera, who played on the 1964 Tulsa team . . . the DoubleTree Riverside Hotel has renamed its lounge this week to the "Hurricane Hut" . . . the Hurricane Hut will be showing on its TV monitors some past Tulsa games this Thursday and Friday . . . the 1945 Orange Bowl between Tulsa and Georgia Tech will be aired, as will the 1991 Freedom Bowl, 1964 Tulsa-Oklahoma State game, the Miracle on 11th Street 1991 football video and a 2003 highlight video . . . Tulsa did not lose any players to the WAC rule requiring players to pass six credits in the fall semester to compete in a bowl game . . . Coach Kragthorpe's parents have made it to Boise, but we haven't seen his brother, Kurt, a sportswriter for the Salt Lake City Tribune, who will be a guest columnist for the Tulsa World this week . . . the players enjoyed some and snow-mobiling and tubing in Idaho City on Wednesday afternoon, then enjoyed a Mexican Fiesta for dinner back in Boise . . . asked about if the weather conditions affected his packing for the trip, equipment manager Eric Smith said he's prepared for any kind of weather on Saturday.

The Tulsa football team arrived in Boise, Idaho at approximately 1:00 pm . . . it was a day filled with fun and food . . . the two teams participated in the "No Rules, Just Right" Outback Steakhouse Beef Bowl . . . while everyone else enjoyed one steak, three Tulsa players and three Georgia Tech players had a little more . . . in a competition of which team could consume the most steaks, Tulsa was represented by offensive lineman Tyrone Milsap, Blair Frederick and Dustin Traynor . . . led by Traynor, on his sixth steak when the competition ended, the Tulsa trio ate a total of 13.5 steaks, while Georgia Tech tallied 11 steaks . . . following the Beef Bowl, the two teams participated in a Tailgate Party, where the bands and cheerleaders of the two teams performed while each team performed a skit . . . Tulsa's skit was performed by five true freshmen, led by backup quarterback Paul Smith . . . the Hurricane will be on the practice field on Wednesday morning at 8:40 am (MT) . . . following Tulsa's press conference at 10:30 am, Tulsa will go snowmobile riding and tubing at Winter Sports Day at Idaho City on Wednesday afternoon . . . and what does quarterback James Kilian say about his injury -- "It feels good. (should I elaborate on that, I guess) It feels pretty good. I've been bopped a couple of times. The X-rays look good. I feel pretty confident about it. It hasn't bothered me in practice, so I feel pretty good about it." . . . Remember to check out daily news and notes for Wednesday.
